what is it when the vehicle back fires,and wants to turn off kinda like sputters??

it does not do this all the time,just every so often.
i was hoping you could tell me how to trouble shoot so that i may try that.

  My first question to you would be what is the rpm's at idle? anything over 1000 can cause this . Generally should be around 850 or less.
