Might seem kind of dumb but have you tried rocking the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key? Also make sure the car is in park and the brake pedal is depressed. Is this a new problem for the car or is this a new car for you?

If the key will not turn forward at all after inserting the key then it sounds more like you have a bad Ignition Lock Cylinder.

All are possibilities ... does the vehicle have an EEC(PCM) controlled security system? If so, GM Vehicles have issues with chipsets on chipped-key ignitions ...

it is possible too that if you had been working on your h2 with or without the key in the ignition you may have drained the battery! A dead battery will lock your key in the ignition until you get a jump start.
