What can cause my Tachometer to stopped working?

My tachometer jumps up when I turn the key and then goes to zero. The engine responds to the accelerator but only for a couple of seconds...then quits.

  these gauges may be connected to one fuse in the fuse panel. a mechanic could check the fuses to see if they are good. it sounds like if both are not working then they are connected.
