I just bought this car and the other day (out of nowhere) i hear this awful grinding noise. i pull over and notice a groove being put into my rotor . but not where u think. its the front of the rotor where the hub attaches.it is 1/2in. wide 1/4 in deep and was ground into the steele within a 1/2mile drive.

its like nothing i have ever seen before. it looks like the caliper is sitting right on top of the front part of ther rotor.

    Hi Laura,
Your cars braking system is run on hydrolic fluid. This fluid lives in the "master cylinder"
Your cars brake pads are "disk brakes". On a disk brake system, the fluid from the master cylinder is used to force pressure into a "caliper" (think of your fist grabbing a stress ball). This squeezes two brake pads against the disk (rotor, looks like an old record or a huge CD). This is attached to your cars wheels, forcing it to slow down or stop.
    Warm regards,
