steering wheel making cranking noise

when i turn my steering wheel, it makes a cranking noise. especially in cold weather

  Could be just about anything. Put on a lift and check for play in wheels (bearings?), and looseness in steering / suspension components.
  
  Possibly a bad ball joint. Noises are hard to pin point without hearing it in person.
  
  If it is a whining noise, the vehicle is low on steering fluid or the power steering pump may be going bad. If it is a clicking noise, the CV joints may be going bad.
