Why does the starter keep running after key is out of locked ignition switch
Car would not start unless i jiggled the key in a certain position. It would sometimes click but i could get it to go. Then after a short trip I turned the key to the off position and took it out, but the starter and the engine kept running. I pulled the negative cable off the battery to get that to stop, but when i tried to reconnect the negative lead to the battery, the starter starts running. I have since replaced the "ignition lock cylinder" and "ignition starter switch" but not the housing they attach to. Those two replacements did not fix the problem. Starter still engages when i try to reconnect the neg battery cable.

Hey Bill, is the "starter solenoid relay" located in/on the starter?

Get access to the starter. With neg battery cable still removed, remove the small wire from the starter motor and don't let it touch anything or pit a piece of electrical tape over the end. Now reconnect the battery cable long enough to see if the starter still runs with the key out. If it still runs, replace the shorted starter, if it does not run now it means that the starter relay is stuck engaged (manual trans only)
