no they wouldn't for that i would first unplug you idle air control valve if it smooths out replace it if it doesn't check for vacuum leaks a popular one to miss is to pinch off the big line to your brake booster i have had the diaphragm get a tear in it and cause that especially if it dies when you hit the brakes.

Did you check for voltage, anywhere? Red wire with brown tracer is voltage to brake switch, hot all the time, fused circuit. Red wire with black tracer is voltage from brake switch to the rear, when switch is activated.

Use a test lite to check for voltage.

did you look at the connectors to the bulbs or inspect the wires? check for corroded wires or connector pins, this could be causing excessive resistance and preventing sufficient voltage from reaching the bulbs.

Road trip in a 2002 VW?
Hello! I have a 2002 VW Jetta with 94,000 miles on it, and I'm planning to go on a long cross-country road trip this summer. Based on past road road trips (with the same car), I estimate that I'll be driving 5,000-7,000 miles in all. But I'm worried about whether ...

It all depends on the vehicle condition; have the car thoroughly inspected by a trusted technician, or do it yourself - using the 'How-To-Guides' on the AutoMD website. The actual mileage is immaterial.

Have the following items inspected; tires, brakes, suspension, steering, alignment, cooling system - plus the typical fluids and engine / filters condition.

The likely cause of this problem you have detailed is a faulty Central Comfort Module CCM. It is located above the pedal cluster to the left of the steering column. Look for burned wires at the connector as well. This is a dealer part.

You should not use any coolant on your VW - only use the VW-recommended G12 or G12+(pink) type of anti-freeze. Try this brand from any local auto parts stores in your area; Beck/Arnley - Engine Coolant / Antifreeze = Part # 252-1022. This type of anti-freeze utilizes phosphated organic acid technology also known as Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT).
At the recommended 50/50 mixture of anti-freeze to water - the cooling system takes 3.8 quarts (little less than 1 gallon) versus the total system capacity of: 7.6 quarts.
