It sounds like it can be a few components either the blower motor is getting ready to burn out or the blower resistor (they can cause the smell you described) I recommend you take your car to a air conditioning and electrical specialist in your area.

Makes sense to me. Thanks! May have been the smelly Saturn that was in front of us right before the smell started up. The smell has lessened substantially.

Remove the instrument gauges printed circuit (PC) board and examine the board for a broken / corroded copper trace. It could be the copper trace was braoken / disturbed during the instrument panel removal / replacement steps.
Other than this possibility, there are the fuse holders being loosened, not gripping the fuse(s) tight. Also, check the ground cable and straps from the instrument panel.

      Door Panels
      REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

      Remove the window regulator handle.
      Remove the arm rest.
      Remove the door lock knob.
Remove the inner door handle cover.
Using a flat screwdriver, gently separate the door trim panel clips from the door.
Lift the panel to remove it and disconnect the speaker or mirror wires as required.
Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure the sheet of plastic behind the panel is properly sealed against the metal to keep drafts out of the interior.

Check the many on-line auto parts sources, such as; www.autopartswarehouse or www.rockauto.com for the replacement parts. For example, they (RockAuto) list the outside mirror from around $157.00 for your vehicle.

Thanks! I'll try it. I found getvwparts.com and they have much better prices too than the dealer. Now hopefully I'll be able to find a mechanic who'll install the new mirror that I will provide. Thanks again.

If you do decide to attempt it yourself buy a repair manual on your model.I never attempt anything on my vehicle without checking in the manual first.

I need to replace passenger side mirror. VW Dealer estimate is $740! Any ideas to do it cheaper?
Parts are $540 and Labor is $165. Yikes! A friend searched junk yards for used parts and was unsuccessful as it's a new model. Need cap, housing and mirror, and to take door apart. I can't do it myself and supposed to take 1 1/2 hours. Thanks for any help and savings!

On manual remote control mirrors, unscrew the adjusting knob.
On electric remote mirrors, carefully pry the control out of the door and disconnect the wiring.
      Remove the inside door panel.
Remove the cable control lock-nut or disconnect the wiring and remove the screws to remove the mirror from the door.
Installation is the reverse of removal.

look at the fuse box in your car.it often exists near the cluth pedal.chech the fuses(you will take out every of them from place if it is burnt you have to change it.it is cheap and you get away ) but if the problem come out the electronical brain there is nothing to do.go to car repair so these vehicles are complately electronical.car have to be checked by expert.don't stop to go if cannot find anything the place that I said so this can cause another electronical problems.
