You can have the OBD II (on-board diagnostics) system scanned - for free - at any local auto parts store. You can also purchase a handheld scanner for around $30-$50.00; I purchased mine from Amazon - and it came with the PC DVD for the various codes. Plus it has free on-line upgrades for the software and related codes. Paid for itself the first time I used it nearly three years ago.

"cabrio was side swiped on the lower pass door." - How bad is this?

Have you checked your relays and fuses? Using a tester if they have voltage coming in?

      2/15/2012 vwman95
It has an inch to 11/2 crease on the lower door, yes i checked the fuses, no relay for these, i haven't checked to see if they're getting any power.

Well basically chief we have to trace the line from the4 headlight up to the switch to know. Now im not sure how VW does their wiring but if the problem started when you got hit then id start from the door in checking the line.

My turning indicators quit working and I could not find a relay for them (the usual suspect). I found out that VW did not put separate relay for the turn indicators but instead routed them thru the emergency flasher relay. Sure enough, when I pulled the emergency flasher button off the dash board (it is part of the relay) and changed it, all fixed. All good for 2 years now. (this is on a 2001 VW beetle)

If you have released the lock (rotated the piece with the finger hook) inside the fender at the side of the headlight assembly and it does not want to come out, it may just be dirt. try working it with your hands on the outside and wiggle the assembly inside the fender, a few times. It worked for me on a 2001 VW new beetle.

Spray WD40 or some oil up in the housing by the latch and try working it with your hands on the outside and wiggle the assembly inside the fender, a few times. It worked for me on a 2001 VW new beetle.
