You can have the OBD II (on-board diagnostics) system scanned - for free - at any local auto parts store. You can also purchase a handheld scanner for around $30-$50.00; I purchased mine from Amazon - and it came with the PC DVD for the various codes. Plus it has free on-line upgrades for the software and related codes. Paid for itself the first time I used it nearly three years ago.

I continously want to learn about cars and judging from the year of your car, its something new. The only milestone i know of the golf is the submodel which was released back in 1997

"cabrio was side swiped on the lower pass door." - How bad is this?

Have you checked your relays and fuses? Using a tester if they have voltage coming in?

It has an inch to 11/2 crease on the lower door, yes i checked the fuses, no relay for these, i haven't checked to see if they're getting any power.

Well basically chief we have to trace the line from the4 headlight up to the switch to know. Now im not sure how VW does their wiring but if the problem started when you got hit then id start from the door in checking the line.

My turning indicators quit working and I could not find a relay for them (the usual suspect). I found out that VW did not put separate relay for the turn indicators but instead routed them thru the emergency flasher relay. Sure enough, when I pulled the emergency flasher button off the dash board (it is part of the relay) and changed it, all fixed. All good for 2 years now. (this is on a 2001 VW beetle)

Your owners manual should have that info? Do you have an owners manual? I'll try to look around.

If you have released the lock (rotated the piece with the finger hook) inside the fender at the side of the headlight assembly and it does not want to come out, it may just be dirt. try working it with your hands on the outside and wiggle the assembly inside the fender, a few times. It worked for me on a 2001 VW new beetle.

What is one of the best ways to fix some surface rust on my strut tower.
The rust is the size of maybe a quarter and it's not poking out the other side. And I want to stop it before it goes that far. I would like maybe step by step procedure so I can do it the rite way.

The actual repair depends on how engrained the corrosion is - if only surface rust, then sand, smooth, prime and paint.
If the rust is deeper in the base metal and cannot be removed or treated by the above method, then it may be necessary to cut out the old metal and apply / weld in a new piece or patch. Once the old rusted section is removed, then cut and weld in a new piece of the same guage (thickness). Weld, sand / grind, prime (rust-proof coating), sand and paint /finish.

How much does it cost to fix the air bags and a possible cooling leak.
I found a car online 200 VW jetta 2.5 with 27 thousand miles on it, it must have been in a crash with some rear and front end damage. Selling the car for 4000 i wondered if it would be worth the fix.
