You need to buy a code reader that is capable of reading air bag codes for Subaru. You cannot diagnose the cause without knowing the specific fault code or codes stored.

I believe that this company Autel sells what you need. It is difficult to wade through all of their products so I suggest you email them and ask what is their cheapest model that can read 99 Subaru SRS (air bag) codes. >> sales@autel.us

How much does the replacement of battery cables generally cost at a mechanic?
The cables are starting to corrode, and there's not enough length to strip them and keep using them. If it's an easy fix, should I just attempt it myself? I have very little experience working on cars.

I don't really know how much a shop wants to replace cables but it not so difficult to do if you try to be patient. Be sure you have the necessary size wrenches or sockets and of course the cables before starting. take the vin# to the dealership and be sure to get the correct cables because the diameter is just as important as the length .Before starting be sure the length is correct by running the new red cable in alongside the old one before removing the old one and see where it connects at the battery pos. red pole and at the starter pole And the black neg. cable to the black neg. minus pole of the battery to engine ground. Connect the engine and starter connection first so as not to short circuit any thing accidently .Disconnect the neg. cable first and reconnect it last . If possible buy a repair manual for your model from a local auto shop. This will give you a good idea of where every thing is on your model subaru. Plus you will always have it if you want to do anything else in the future. Good luck with it .

Take the old cables to the local auto parts store - for an exact match. The replacement cable prices will vary based on the size (guage) and overall length. Usually priced from around $5.00 each on up.

Basically ac static pressure is around 50psi (pounds/sq in). Check under the hood and see how many pounds of freon you can add in this system.... you don't want a blown compressor.

      Hello
This is a very common problem with almost all Subaru cars. $1800-$2100 sounds about right.

You'll have to remove the covers and check the belt.

I have checked over the belt several times u think its just not in time yet
    • HouseCallAuto

Model year '97 and newer the engine is an interference engine. I believe that you misaligned the timing belt somehow, maybe you used the incorrect reference marks. At any case, there is no compression so that means either the valves are already bent after you cranked the engine over with the belt misaligned, or maybe somehow you get lucky and when you put the belt on correctly that the compression will return. I hope that you are following a printed procedure with pictures and you are not just doing this on the fly.

I'll keep trying. Thank u. So even tho it just turned over it can still bend the valves. I had one person tell me that it had to crank and run to bend the valves and it would still crank even tho the valves was bent and it would just run rough

The information that I have says the 2.2L is not an interference engine.

      2/8/2013 HouseCallAuto
Just about every web site I checked specifically mentioned that the 2.2 was not an interference engine UP UNTIL 1996. From 1997 on it was absolutely an interference engine. The gates web site incorrectly says it is a non-interference engine.

well I know for sure that it is in time now but still no compression and won't crank had a mechanic helping me yesterday and it had him stumpt so I am still back to the drawing board

      2/9/2013 HouseCallAuto
If you now have discovered that the belt was in fact installed incorrectly and you now have put the belt in the correct position and you have no compression, well then there is no other answer other than bent valves. I truly feel bad for you, really I do.

another mechanic said he had the same problem and he found a blown fuse goin to look at that first but my luck it is def sure a bent valve thank u so much for ur help
      Mike
      2/9/2013 HouseCallAuto
You are welcome. Do you really need me to tell you that a blown fuse cannot cause loss of engine compression? If a mechanic told you that, he is not a mechanic.

I need new tires for winter driving
I need to know what size tire my 2000 Legacy takes, and if I need some special kind of snow tire because of it being all-wheel drive? I didn't get a manual because I bought my car 2nd hand.

Check the tires size already on the vehicle - buy this same size to insure the correct fit.

      Hi There
I agree with Jimm, you can also reference the label on the drivers door edge or on the vehicles "B" pillar. This label will tell you what size tires the vehicle came with. Make sure you use 4 new tires of matching diameter to avoid any differential lock up issues. Hope this helps.
