Why do I hear a thrumming sound when braking?Marie - 2009 Subaru Impreza - Brakes - 7/30/2012It started after the car sat idle for 6 weeks. Seems to be associated with the wheels because the faster I'm traveling, the faster the sound is. Car has 33,000 miles, all original equipment. -
Car vibrates heavily when the brakes are applied.Ironmonkeyz - 2001 Subaru Forester - Brakes - 7/5/2012When braking the car vibrates hard. Feels like it's coming from the front. Brake fluid is filled. I'm think maybe it's the rotors but not sure. anybody got any ideas?-
7/5/2012 JimmUsually, this is an indication of warped brake rotors. Depending how much rotor material is remaining (how thick the rotors are), you can either have them turned to true up (make the rotor braking surfaces parallel) or simply replace them. Compare the cost and aggravation as first step.
Try the many on-line auto parts sources, such as; www.RockAuto.com or www.autoparstwarehouse.com for the replacement parts. For example, the new front brake rotors are around $17.25 each for your vehicle.
They are not difficult at all to replace. Try the 'How-To-Guides' feature on the AutoMD website for the specific step s to replace the front brake rotors.

Both front and rear breaks are making some scratching sounds and I just put some new brakes 8 months agochenjeez - 1998 Subaru Legacy - Brakes - 2/22/2012Sometimes the sound disappear for about weeks-
2/22/2012 Spoon SportsOn my friend's pick up truck we found that when he last did his front brakes, he forgot to tighten one of the caliper carrier bolts. The bolt fell out and the entire caliper assembly began dragging on the outer edge of the rotor. I would start by taking the front wheels off and feeling the entire brake assembly and seeing if anything is loose. If you can't find anything, spin the rotor (with the wheel still off) and listen for the noise. If you find that the noise is not coming from the front, repeat the same procedure with the rear wheels.
