Change automatic transaxle fluid and filterclifford - 2005 Pontiac Montana - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 4/11/2012-
4/11/2012 EG9 K20A3Easy Steps in Changing Transmission Fluid and Filter.
1. Make sure the fluid is warm. Warm up the car so the transmission is at normal operating temperature. Pull the transmission dipstick (located near the firewall in most cars). Fresh fluid is translucent and cherry red. Some darkening is normal, but if it is reddish brown or mustard color and smells like burnt varnish, it is worn out.
2. Drain the fluid by loosening the pan. Select the correct filter replacement based on pan shape and prepare a large pan to catch the fluid. Then loosen each pan bolt a turn or two and loosen one corner more than rest. Drain mostly from this corner.
3. Finish removing the pan and any gasket material from the pan or case. Avoid scratching the metal and make sure the pan’s gasket surface isn’t bent or distorted.
4. Remove the old filter. Most transmission filters are held in place with a bolt or two, but some are held by a clip. Be careful to include O-Rings or other seals.
5. Install a new filter. Use the clips or bolts from the old filter. Be sure O-Rings, etc. are in place. If the filter has a long intake neck, gently push the neck into place without unseating the O-Ring.
6. Clean the pan thoroughly. Inspect the pan before cleaning. A small amount of fine grey clutch dust is normal. However, if you find metal shavings, there has been transmission damage. Clean the pan with solvent and wipe dry so there is no harmful residue.
7. Position gasket on pan. Some gaskets have four holes slightly smaller than the rest to allow four bolts through the pan and through these smaller holes to hold the gasket in place.
8. Hand tighten pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern. After that, use a torque wrench to tighten bolts to proper ft-lbs as per manufacturer.
9. Refill the transmission using only the amount shown as “refill capacity” in the owners manual using the type of fluid specified for the vehicle.
10. If doing only a partial fluid replacement, skip to instruction 12 below. If doing a complete fluid replacement, follow the steps in instruction 11.
11. You now have replaced the fluid in the pan. To replace the fluid in the torque converter and oil cooler also, follow these steps.
Step 1. Obtain the total system capacity of the vehicle from the manufacturer. Have this amount readily available.
Step 2. Disconnect the oil cooler line from the oil cooler. As you may not know which is the pressure side and which is the return side, have both directed so the stream of fluid will be directed toward a receptacle.
Step 3. With another person, be prepared to add ATF to the fill area as it is being pumped out of the oil cooler line.
Step 4. Start the engine, and as the old fluid is pumped out, add fresh fluid to the pan.
Step 5. When either the fluid color brightens or the total capacity has been replaced, shut the engine off and re-attach the oil cooler line. All fluids has now been changed.
12. Recheck the fluid level. With the car on level ground, set the parking brake and the transmission in “Park” or “Neutral.” Let the engine idle for a few minutes. Shift the transmission into different positions before returning the lever to “Park” or “Neutral.” Check the fluid level again and check for leaks.

All of a sudden while driving, my G6 quit pulling in forward gear and will will not go forward in any gear.Jim - 2007 Pontiac G6 - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 4/10/2012It will go in reverse just as normal. Bought it new in Oct 07 with 23,000 miles. serviced every 3,000 miles and have not had any problems since bought. Did have the transmission serviced at 76,000 miles. Now have 98,000 miles and am not having any noise, vibration, ... -
Why is there a humm/vibration in the transmission when under a light load?Djama - 2008 Pontiac G6 - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 4/9/2012Whether in cruise or not, any hill or span of road that needs acceleration causes transmission to humm loudly. Sometimes I can feel a vibration in the shifting lever -

4/5/2012 CVOSee this Stoplight Switch
For your 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1L SFI OHV 6cyl
http://www.autozone.com/.../N-j1nyaZ9cias
Stoplight switch directs current to the stop lights, cruise control, and shift interlock to turn them on or off.
When not replaced, stop lights will run continually or not function, potentially causing premature bulb failure, safety issues and/or the transmission will not shift out of park.

How do I changed my throttle position sensor in my carkeith carthen - 2001 Pontiac Sunfire - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 4/5/2012Shifting wrong-
4/5/2012 Aaron the FabricatorIf you go to your local auto parts store and get a manual for your car it will have a description of where it is located usually for GM they are located on the throttle body with two screws ,torx heads, I believe. It is relatively easy but exact directions for the repair will be better found in a Chilton's manual.

How do I TROUBLESHOOT THE SPEEDODOMEMER I'VE REPLACED THE SENSOR WITH THE BATTERY DISCONNECTED FOR 10 MINUTESTerry - 1996 Pontiac Grand Am - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 3/12/2012-
3/12/2012 Spoon SportsFirst try replacing the speedometer cable, if this doesn't do the trick you will have to replace the speedometer, in a lot of cases this means that the wind shield and dash board will have to be taken out, before you can extract the speedometer. The best place to go for another speedometer would be the junk yard. They can check it for you, to make sure it is in proper working order before you purchase it.

I hear a pulsating thumping sound on the front passenger side when driving at 25 -30 miles/hrrmb - 2003 Pontiac Aztek - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 3/9/2012-
11/16/2011 JimmSeveral possibilities; faulty / worn wheel bearing, faulty / worn strut mount, faulty / worn suspension bushing. Try the 'How-To-Guides' feature on this website for specific steps to inspect the front end / suspension for play and looseness. -
2/29/2012 JimmSame answer as before. Several possibilities; faulty / worn wheel bearing, faulty / worn strut mount, faulty / worn suspension bushing. Try the 'How-To-Guides' feature on this website for specific steps to inspect the front end / suspension for play and looseness.
As you have discovered - rotating the wheels did not help resolve the issue. If the repair shop charges too much (whatever that means) try a different garage - or do it yourself (again, try the AutoMD website for detailed 'How-To' instructions.)
3/6/2012 rmbOk, got the problem repaired in a nearby repair shop and you were right!!!... It was a faulty wheel bearing!... Now the sound is gone!... You got my tail wagging there, Jimm!
3/9/2012 rmbBy the way, it cost me $312 to have the wheel bearing replaced (RT side only).. That's Sacramento, Ca rate and I think that's less expensive than the price of dealership repair shops. -
3/9/2012 JimmCan't say for sure if the repair price you paid at $312.00 is reasonable - there is nothing to compare with.
The relative part cost (front or rear hub and bearing assembly is around $44.00) with the balance of the price paid for the labor - is this a fair price? Again, cannot tell - as there were no other estimates or information given.

My car is having a hard time cranking. My battery is new, just had an oil change, and the alternator isn't old????kturpin - 2003 Pontiac Vibe - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 3/8/2012The alternator was replaced in the last two years. It revs high when I first crank it and it shakes when I pit it in reverse.-
3/8/2012 CamarozenThe hard start and the reverse problems are most likely not related. If the vehicle shakes when driving in reverse, the suspension needs to be checked for faulty components. Does the engine crank slowly or just after a second of cranking? This could be a problem with the starter or the battery cables, the system should be throughly checked by your local shop or grab the service/repair manual and follow the steps if you feel up to it.
3/8/2012 kturpinIt is slow to crank but once it's cranked it seems to be fine.

Is the speedometer in my 1990 pontiac trans sport electric or does it work off a cableBOB - 1990 Pontiac Trans Sport - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 3/5/2012The speedometer works but is not accurate. does it have a speed sensor or cable-
3/5/2012 Spoon SportsIn one type of car the speedometer head is connected to the output shaft of the transmission by means of flexible speedo cable. Which is attached to the pinion gear in the transmission.
Take out the engine cover and doghouse to remove the speedometer cable from your car. Take out the bolt from under the dashboard, so that you can easily access the old speedometer cable. Also remove the nut on the rotating shaft and pull the speedometer cable out through the passage. Remove the clamps present on the transmission and engine compartment. Once you have removed the old speedometer cable from your car, you need to replace it with a new one.

How do change light for gear shifter?jvolpe55 - 2004 Pontiac Vibe - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 3/2/2012lights out for shifter cant tell what gear it is in at night-
2/29/2012 Spoon SportsUsually there is a small metal clip at the bottom front of the shift knob (looks like a staple.) Just pull it out and pull the knob straight up.
OR Are you talking about the one on the instrument cluster?
If you are sure its a busted bulb because it MAYBE because of something else. The problem is probably a blown fuse. Check the owner's manual for location of the fuse panel, find the fuse marked instrument panel (or similar), and put in a new fuse. If the new fuse blows, there is a short which will have to be located and repaired.
3/1/2012 jvolpe55Hi
Check fuse ok. Its the bulb in instrument cluster . The one with Drive, Reverse Neutral.1st and 2nd . on the floor shifter. It could be loose or bad. Thank u -
