6/24/2012 CVOThe Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is a magnetic pick-up that sends a signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The sensor measures the rotation of the transmission and the PCM determines the corresponding vehicle speed.
If the engine functioned properly, then the VSS isn't the culprit, check the instrument clusters.

6/17/2012 ddwith 230xxx miles i would say tranny. they go fast like that. pull the dipstick for the trans. if it smells burnt or is black, then i would say tranny.

Transmission goes into neutral under certain condions.Bill Duffie - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 6/17/2012When making a sharp Right turn the transmission disengages, when slow down will engage again. The same is true with a hard stop, when go to start is not engaged. Does not happen when making a left turn. Only happens with these 2 situations.

When the shifter is stiff and won't go in gear where is the problem?T. Maiden - 1998 Pontiac Sunfire - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 6/6/2012Just put a transmission in a 98 Pontiac sunfire. Clutch is soft and the shifter is showing to be in neutral but when I ease off the clutch it's trying to pull forward. And the shifter won't move to any gear . It's hard!!
