Why does my car sound like it needs to shift but the RPM's are fine?
Had the codes pulled. They said I needed a thermostat, which I haven't replaced yet. and a Transmission speed sensor which I just put on. Still sounds like it needs to shift but RPM's show it is fine. Any thoughts?

Need more information - what are the specific fault codes that have been retrieved? Please post a reply as this information would help assist with the issue you are having.

Speedometer doesn't work, RPM's have to be real high before it will shift, trac warning light is on,
changed wheel bearing last year, 98,0000

The vehicle speed sensor is probably junk. It is a sensor that is located on the transmission. Read fault codes with a code reader. probablt will find a code for the speed sensor.

Why does my car whine during idle and driving?
My car whines very loudly when it is started, during idle (and it seems to idle high-but my tachometer doesn't work) and while driving (not during acceleration, but when you let off the gas). My engine light is not on, and it drives fine just noisy and sort of annoying.

Remove the serpentine belt and start the engine and see if the noise is gone and if it is, then locate which of the components that is turned by the belt is the origin of the noise.

OK, I will have my husband check that after work this evening. He was leaning towards it being a belt issue. Thanks!

    Whirring, Hissing, Burnt Rubber
First, I want to say that I don't really have any idea if this is the right category or not. My car has suddenly developed what I can best describe as a very loud whirring sound coming from what seems to be the front passenger side when I attempt to drive it. The ...

I believe that your tire is rubbing on a broken or twisted plastic splash panel which would cause your whirring sound and give a burnt rubber smell / melted plastic smell. If it were the brakes I doubt that the noise would begin instantly as soon as you pull away when everything is cold. Ya know when ya know? This is one of those times....

What you may be smelling is the brake pads on that side due to overheating. The caliper or
brake hose is defective. The only thing to cause the rubber smell would be if something is
rubbing against the tire (not likely). To check for a caliper or hose failure is to drive the car
till the problem occurs. Then jack up the front of the car. Put car in neutral then turn each
tire. Notice if the passenger side tire is harder to turn than the driver side.

Thank you for the help! The front passenger coil spring had rusted through in a spot and was now pressing against the tire.

My Speedometer, ODO are not working and my transmission will not shift into 4th gear and runs at high RPMS.

Check Fuse 5 (10 amp) in the fuse panel inside the car. There are 2 speed sensors. One is for the speedometer and is located just above the driver side axle shaft in the transmission bell housing (VSS) and the other is the Input shaft speed sensor (ISS). Are you sure that you replaced the VSS ? The P0722 is saying that the VSS is not functioning. If you did replace the correct VSS then maybe a wire is broken near the connector. The P0507 is unrelated to this (maybe clean the throttle body to get this code solved) The P0700 is just saying that the transmission control module requested that the check engine light be illuminated. It is not a specific fault, its pointing to the P0722.

Transmission Real hard shifting (Daughters car)
When you give it gas it feels like engine is almost flooding out. If you are sitting on a hill in drive, soon as you take foot off brake it will start rolling..Almost like driving a manual transmission vehicle

Code readers, maybe you have heard of them. Get one from amazon.com for $20 and plug it in and read fault codes stored. That is step one in diagnosing a condition as you detail here. This step cannot be skipped as it is a must to know if there are fault codes stored. The check engine lamp need not be illuminated for codes to be present. Update this same post with the code numbers, and if by chance there are no codes present, state that as well because that says something also.

Very strong probability that the catalytic converter is clogged. A clogged cat would give you a P0300 random misfire and a catalytic converter that is not working can and usually does set a P0420. The P0440 is likely a bad Canister Vent Solenoid/Valve unrelated to the other two codes. To confirm the cat, remove the O2 sensor before the cat (yes there will be a loud exhaust leak) and then road test car and if power returned you know the cat is plugged. See how nice codes tell a story.

Pontiac Grand Prix GT with 88K miles showing has check engine light on with P0466 code
I am having a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT with 88K miles on it. It is showing a check engine light with the codes P0466. I am not sure if that can be repaired by a local mechanic or I need to go to the dealer. I also need to know how severe is the issue and how much ...

There is no such code P0466 applicable to a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8 engine according to my all data information system. Perhaps you misread it?

Would putting lube oil in transmission be difficult to correct?
mileage 197xxx should I flush the system?

    • Jimm
      11/12/2013 Jimm
Not difficult to correct at all; first question - is the transmission an automatic? If yes, then simply disoconnect the transmission fluid return line at the radiator - and with the engine / starter engaged (crank the engine - do not start) simply drain some of the trans fluid / lube oil mixture into a small bucket. Refill the transmission with fresh, new trans fluid - and repeat the process until cleaned out.
You may also need to the change the trans fluid and filter to complete the task.

I'm sure nobody has a final answer on this. Oil contaminates everything. Not sure if a flush will do it. Might take many flushes using a trans-tech machine fluid exchanger.

Why is it shifting hard into 2nd?
When i accelerate hard from a stop, there's a delay as if it went into nuetral, then it shifts really hard into 2nd gear. If i ease out of a stop then its ok. My check engine light is on but its not throwin codes for the transmission

Try changing the transmission filter and transmission fluid. Use synthetic fluid.
