Sounds like there is a hydraulic issue with your slave cylinder. First make sure your clutch reservoir is full. Not sure mileage on your vehicle but your clutch disc could be wore, however usually you get no grab in the clutch when letting out pedal.

First step - have the stored fault codes or check engine light scanned - for free - at any local auto parts store; Advance Auto, Auto Zone, NAPA. Then, post a reply as 'add answer' with the specific code for more assistance. There may be a fault code stored in the OBD memory which may not be displayed as a check engine light.

Possible Causes of Engine Hesitation or Stumble:

Dirty fuel injectors (cleaning the injectors often fixes this)
      Dirty air filter (change filter)
Dirty / clogged fuel filter (change filter)
Bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
      Bad TPS (throttle position) sensor
Bad or dirty MAF (mass airflow) sensor
Low fuel pressure (leaky fuel pressure regulator or weak fuel pump)
Vacuum leaks (intake manifold, vacuum hoses, throttle body, EGR valve)
Bad gasoline (fuel contaminated with water or too much alcohol)

Sometimes, what feels like a hesitation is actually ignition misfire rather than lean misfire. The causes of ignition misfire may include:

      Dirty or worn spark plugs
      Bad plug wires
      Weak ignition coil
      Wet plug wires

Need more information - does the engine idle at normal speeds / RPMs in park or neutral gears? Does the transmission shift OK once leaving the idle speed condition after the stop condition?
    • AutoMD Member
      5/31/2014 AutoMD Member
yes everything is normal but when i take off thats when the problem starts the rpms will go up for a few seconds but goes back down sometimes it seems to running out of gear not shiting

OK - check these items as first steps; transmission fluid level (refill as required), check under the hood for any engine vacuum leaks (hoses dry or cracked - replace as required) especially in the area of the air intake before and aft of the air filter.

So, by your description - it seems the transmission does not upshift when accelerating like normal away from a stop - is this correct? The transmission remains in the lower gear, but does not shift automatically to the higher gears when the vehicle speed dictates - is this correct? Does the transmission shift manually - that is - are you able to manually shift from first, to second, to third, etc. using the shifter selection?
      5/31/2014 AutoMD Member
yes is does not always shaft automatically it takes awhile if at all fluid levels are normal

Do I need to replace my CV Joints/Axles?
I was coming home from work on the highway doing about 60-65 mph, I slowed down and turned off to get on my street, everything seemed normal until I got to 35 mph when suddenly my car pulled to the right very hard, I pulled into a gas station to check on my front ...

Most likely - the sound is related to the CV joints / halfshaft assemblies being worn. How many miles on the vehicle / CV halfshafts?

The new / remanufactured CV axle halfshaft assemblies cost around $32.00 (left or right sides) each from these on-line auto parts sources;,,,, - to list only a few possibilities.

Be sure to replace both the front CV halfshaft assemblies at the same time - due to mileage / age / wear considerations.

Its got 260k and some change, other than what I've replaced on the car I'm almost positive everything on it is original. My dad and I figured that it might be that but we wanted the opinion of others before we start ordering parts and whatnot. I appreciate your answer though and hopefully that's what the problem is.

Sounds like a heat shield came loose. Can't imagine any shop billing for more than one hour of labor fpor fixing it. Typical hourlt labor rate depending on geographic location will range from $60 to $110 per hour.

The axle hasn't came out yet from my 97 Grand Prix but it's ready to it jumps badly when gas is pushed but when drifting freely it's smooth running

The parts are readily available from these many on-line sources,,,,, - to list only a few possibilities.
In fact, they (RockAuto) list the front axle / CV halfshaft assembly from around $42.00 (each) for your vehicle. Be sure to replace both the CV halfshafts at the same time due to mileage / age / wear considerations.

Why does my car sound like it needs to shift but the RPM's are fine?
Had the codes pulled. They said I needed a thermostat, which I haven't replaced yet. and a Transmission speed sensor which I just put on. Still sounds like it needs to shift but RPM's show it is fine. Any thoughts?

engine overheated 6 times, finally head gasket & other issues came up, replaced with v-8, mileage was not high, only 68000

Speedometer doesn't work, RPM's have to be real high before it will shift, trac warning light is on,
changed wheel bearing last year, 98,0000

The vehicle speed sensor is probably junk. It is a sensor that is located on the transmission. Read fault codes with a code reader. probablt will find a code for the speed sensor.

Why does my car whine during idle and driving?
My car whines very loudly when it is started, during idle (and it seems to idle high-but my tachometer doesn't work) and while driving (not during acceleration, but when you let off the gas). My engine light is not on, and it drives fine just noisy and sort of annoying.

Remove the serpentine belt and start the engine and see if the noise is gone and if it is, then locate which of the components that is turned by the belt is the origin of the noise.
      3/6/2014 JuliaGulia
OK, I will have my husband check that after work this evening. He was leaning towards it being a belt issue. Thanks!
