Do I need a new clutch if my clutch pedal feels like it broke?
My clutch pedal collapsed and moves freely and with no pressure whatsoever.

No. You need a new slave cylinder or clutch master cylinder. pop the hood and look in front of the driver side by the brake booster. 2" white fluid reservoir. Thats for the clutch. If she is out of fluid, you sprung a leak or the seals went. Very common. I just did the one in my 2000 TA with only 16k miles on it.

At 55 MPH starts to vibrate, it seems like it is comming fromthe drive shaft to me Question? Could this be a bad U-Joint
1985 Trans AM (27 years old) over 100,000 miles on the clock, below 55 it is smooth with no vibration at all. Tires were balanced

      8/15/2012 Oberth1
driveshaft might be out of balance, u-joints could be shot, yolk on rear of trans could be moving. If its stick the trans could have too much play on the main shaft.

What causes a car to idle high while parked?
How can I fix it? Is it worth fixing? Does this have to do with the engine ?
    • CVO

It might be the idle air control valve.
The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve controls the engine idle speed and dashpot functions. The valve is located on the side of the throttle body. This valve allows the necessary amount of air, as determined by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and controlled by a duty cycle signal, to bypass the throttle plate in order to maintain the proper idle speed.

The check engine light doesn't have to be ON to store a fault code.

Check the vehicle for fault codes to see if there are any sensors were involved to the malfunction of the engine.

1.Local auto parts stores such as Autozone ( not in California) or Advance Auto parts will scan and retrieve any diagnostic trouble codes ( dtc ) stored in the powertrain control module for free of charge..

      2. has the code reader for less than $20.00 dollars.

3.Re-post the dtc's in here " answer question " for further assistance.

Note: we need the dtc's to identify the sensor, there are a dozen different sensors to operate the car.

Visit this site and see all the different sensors.

Navigate to this site and see the code reader

      1. Check the brake pedal position sensor 10 Amp fuse. If it's Ok.
2.Check the brake pedal position sensor and his own module, it controlled the Body control module to release the A/T shift lock control solenoid.

Read fault codes with a code reader. That is the next step. Tell us the codes on the repost. if no codes, state that. What do you mean by using the word "crank" ? Crank is only to be used to describe the starter motor working or not. Example: the engine will crank over but will not start. I want more details. make me feel like I am there.

I have never seen anything but a new transmission solve this in all my years.
      7/31/2012 chris
I recently took my car to advance autoparts because the check engine soon light came on and they put the code reader on it and it said that the transmission selinoid needs to be replaced and the symptoms they gave of one malfunctioning or going bad pretty much match up to what I feel has been going on with my car but when I called several transmission mechanics I was told that I shouldn't buy the part and that in their expierence the selinoid going bad has hardly ever been the reason behind it.

My 98 Firebird 3.8 has an automatic transmission, shifter button pushes in but shifter wont come out of park
this just recently started to happen, my car has just over 127xxx miles and it will eventually shift after a good while but happens every time you put it into park and turn the car off. after you get it to move it works just fine.

      See this Stoplight Switch
For your 1998 Pontiac Firebird 3.8L SFI OHV 6cyl

Stoplight switch directs current to the stop lights, cruise control, and shift interlock to turn them on or off
When not replaced, stop lights will run continually or not function, potentially causing premature bulb failure, safety issues and/or the transmission will not shift out of park.
