Sounds like fuel pump, which are generally rated at 50k miles. Modern fuel pumps are inside the gas tank and require that you drop the whole tank to replace the pump. Also check your battery terminals. they may be loose and not allowing things to go.

Engine makes sound of deflating balloon when shut off
I have a sound coming from the back (near Firewall) of the engine when I turn the car off, which sounds like air escaping from an untied balloon. Any ideas?

make sure the vacuum hose on the fuel pressure regulator is on, on the bottom of the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail, its a small black vacuum line that hooks to the nipple of the regulator. OR it might be the refrigerant (A/C) pressurizing or something. My MCS does not do this, but my other vehicles do this after driving w/ the A/C on. The hotter the day, the longer it "hisses" for.

Try running w/o the A/C on (even better w/ the whole auto a/c system shut down), and see if your car hisses at you after a drive.

      OR

I might be the supercharger, i blieve the S has one equiped. Whether it's somehow depressurizing or coasting to a stop, you can hear it because the engine is off.

By the way, welcome to the club, you are not alone

Thanks for the help. I understand there may have been an issue with some of the fuel pumps on Minis, so I'll start with the vacuum hose on the FPR. I'll let you know what the outcome is.

2006 Mini Cooper S with extremily high fuel consumption...
I just bought a 2006 Cooper S and the fuel consumption is extremely high, around 18L/100Km, is what a Hummer burns. I changed both O2 sensors because the scanner showed O2 sensor error, but there was no improvement. I have read about reasons that could explain this, ...

    05 Cooper S check engine code P136
I cleared the code and the check engine light was off for about a week. Now it's back on. looks like it's the downstream O2 sensor. I saw a TSB listed about this code but couldn't read the complete message. I have a new sensor to put in. Guess the best thing is to ...

      P0136 = Oxygen O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
Possible symptoms = Poor fuel mileage, possible misfire, depending on O2 sensor position when sticking.

A code P0136 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

Faulty O2 sensor leak in exhaust close to O2 sensor
Short to voltage on O2 signal circuit
Open in circuit resistance caused by corrosion in connector

      Possible Solutions:
Replace the second oxygen sensor on bank 1
Repair open or short in signal circuit
      Clean corrosion from connector

You have to use a scan tool to verify the stored trouble code and to reset/delete the stored trouble code.

What is wrong when the motor sounds like tactactactac
the vehicle mileage is 21000. I can hear the noise always either cold or warm but most when cold. I care it has nothing to do with pistons.

I heard there were some issues with the timing chain on some of the Mini Cooper engines. Check TSBs for engine noise.

    EXHAUST EMISSIONS LIGHT ON?

too many causes for this light to come on. have it scanned for the particular code that it is sending please and post them here so we can help you more. advance auto or auto zone may have the correct scanner for this model, if not you may have to call a few shops and pay to have it scanned. it is alot cheaper than just throwing money and guessing at what is the cause.

You should diagnose your vehicle first with a scan tool to determine what the stored trouble code is. The extracted trouble code will help you.

      1/26/2011 yboy82
You post the extracted trouble code here. If you don't have any scan tool you can visit Autozone for free diagnostic.

Could not clear the trouble code PO130.
Just replaced sensors, upstream and down.

    • Nick
      8/12/2010 Nick
Usually the cause of P0130 is a bad oxygen sensor, however this isn't always the case. If your o2 sensors haven't been replaced and they are old, it's a good bet that the sensor is the problem. But, It could be caused by any of the following:

Water or corrosion in the connector
      Loose terminals in the connector
      Wiring burnt on exhaust components
Open or short in the wiring due to rubbing on engine components
Holes in exhaust allowing unmetered oxygen into exhaust system
Unmetered vacuum leak at the engine
      Bad o2 sensor
      Bad PCM
      Nick
      8/14/2010 Pinoy
Thanks Nick, I did put in new o2 sensor's and all the connectors seems good. I have 2 parts that I haven't check which are the PCM and the knock sensor.
