This is a heat shield for the hot exhaust system / catalytic converter area to prevent the floor boards from heating up and melting your carpeting or worse. did someone just recently do a repair under your car and maybe did not put back all the screws that retain the shield. if not it is possible for the shield to come loose on it's own.

Our vehicle starts shaking hard when it's in drive and we come to a complete stop. No ck engine lights come on.
When vehicle is in drive and we come to a complete stop, it starts shaking. While brake pedal is pushed, you can feel the vehicle trying to move forward against the brake. No ck engine lights come on. We can put it in neutral and it will stop shaking.

Vibration right before engine shifts into each gear
The car vibrates before it shifts into each gear - at approximately the same speed each time. If feels like you are running over the wake-up bumbs on the side of the road or the small bumps in the road that lets you know there is a stop sign ahead. This does not ...

Change the tranny fluid and filter. Ford's are bad about this. It will only do this under moderate acceleration, correct? This is the torque convertor lock-up shudder. The tranny in your car is real bad about "cooking" tranny fluid real fast. If you plan on keeping it for a while, put an aux. cooler on it when you change the fluid. Go with a good quality synthetic also.

I just had the problem you describe with my 96 LS 160kms....Went to Ford dealer in town and had trans flushed and replaced with synthetic fluid. Cost was $275 Cdn but has been running like silk for the last week. Service tech said fluid was black - obviously way overdue.

96 Grand Marquis - torque converter shudder
Have 160,000kms on it....occurs under "light" acceleration.....I am reading many conflicting opinions regarding trans flush/fill vs simply draining the fluid and refilling. Some say a flush may actually damage the transmission as it forces debris throughout the ...

First verify that the "shudder" is a torque converter shudder. Does it feel like your driving over "rumble strips" then goes away after 50mph? Operate vehicle in D not overdrive, is shudder not there? When operating vehicle in OD, while shudder is occurring tap brake pedal (lightly) with left foot, did shudder stop? If all of these are yes, most likely it is a torque converter shudder. Transmission Fluid change may not solve the problem, but you can try this first. Have transmission serviced (filter fluid pan gasket) using Ford Mercon V.

First verify it is the torque converter shuddering. Do you have a shudder if driven in Drive not Overdrive? Have the transmission serviced (not flushed) with a new filter and Mercon V fluid. This may reduce torque converter clutch shudder if damage has not already occurred.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Had a long chat with Ford Serv tech at dealership in town. This problem wasnt foreign to him. He opted for a flush and explained why...and installed 16 litres of synthetic tranny oil......the old fluid was seems to be driving like silk for the last two days..........

What if I hear a clunk sound when car is running and keeps shutting off when on?
Started like a week ago the car does turn on but makes this loud clunk noise then shut off. It also reads that my car is over heating but my car would just be on for a few minutes and now I see water leaking out around Tue bottom middle part of my vehicles .

My column shifter is limp and my car won't go into gear. Any ideas on what it could be?
    • Kenny@RJ'S
      9/23/2012 Kenny@RJ'S
The column has shifter rod bushings in the steering column that wear out, also under the dash at the end of the shifter tube that goes through the column there are two screws that loosen up holding a bracket to the shifter cable and cause loose shifting, you can see this with a flashlight under the dash and wiggle the shifter up and down and see if the bracket is loose from the shifter tube.
