Transmission seems to be between gearsmike1965 - 1997 Mercury Mountaineer - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 7/14/2012When put in neutral seems to want to go forward-
7/14/2012 JimmYou may have a bad shift cable or one out of adjustment, in which case the shifter may be in park on the dash, but on the transmission may be in between park and reverse. What you need to do is put it in park, and disconnect the shifter cable at the transmission...see if the linkage on the transmission further moves into the park position. Once adjusted for the correct Park position, then the Neutral position should be OK.

6/16/2012 HouseCallAutoNeed far more specific info. I cannot know the "piece that needed to be connected" I don't know id you are describing an electrical connector, a hose or what. And prior to you connecting this piece to something there was no issue with shifting. You have provided no detail here. I am still in the dark.
6/21/2012 GetmoneymadnessI did some research and the piece that I connected I believe was the brake fluid sensor, I remember before connecting it I wiped off some brake fluid that looked like it was leaking out. Before I connected the piece I never had any problems with shifting. So now I have turn the key to unlock the gear shift, put it in N, then start the car, then I can shift it into D or R. Thanks

5/21/2012 CVOSee this ......... Stoplight Switch
For your 2004 Mercury Truck Mountaineer 2WD 4.6L SFI 8cyl
Stoplight switch directs current to the stop lights, cruise control, and shift interlock to turn them on or off
When not replaced, stop lights will run continually or not function, potentially causing premature bulb failure, safety issues and/or the transmission will not shift out of park.
