      Here's what I did:

      - jacked the car up
      - removed the undertray
      - worked my hand up to the latch and just pulled on the cable, it opened right up

Conclusion, the wire must have snapped somewhere between the fender and the inside of the car.

How do you check transmission flued?

    • Jimm

Check the transmission fluid level and condition (color and smell) with the transmission dipstick. The fluid should be warm - not cold - to gain the most accurate reading.

why is my 1999 lexus gs300 tstuck in park!
1 have to push the park lock mechanism manually with screw driver to get it into drive. also have trouble going to reverse from drive. thinking its the pnp switch on the side of the transmission. someone told me they thought it was the solenoid on the shifter ...

Seems the PNP switch is the Park Neutral Position switch which is used to sense the position of the shifter. Sometimes these switches may stick or if the car was started/stopped with the shifter in an "in between" position the computer may have seen it as a malfucntion.

I would suggest clearing the code and seeing if it comes back. If it comes back have the switch replaced. Most times these swicthes are on the side of the transmission.

    $900high preassure transmission fluid line
162,000 miles....when I took car in to mechanic they showed me a slow leak at place where fluid line connects to part, possibly transmission. They told me it would cost $900 to repair the leak. Is this reasonable?

This definitely sounds like too much. Try the 'Find-A-Shop' feature on this website to gain other cost estimates for this repair.
Try the many on-line auto parts sources, such as; www.RockAuto.com or www.autopartswarehouse.com for the replacement parts. For example, the transmission line for your vehicle lists for around $25.00 to $30.00 for the steel pressure line; bulk @ 25 feet length -depending on the inside diameter (5/16" or 3/8") from any local auto parts store; Advance Auto, O' Reilly's, NAPA, Auto Zone.
The transmission pressure line or hose subassembly can even be fabricated locally - for less expense - by an automotive hose shop. Just remove the old one and take to the shop for an exact duplicate - still less than the $900.00.

    Proceedure to change transmission filter
What is proper way to change transmission oil and filter

    • Jimm
      11/28/2011 Jimm
Position an oil drain pan under the transmission pan. Loosen and remove the transmission pan mounting bolts - leave maybe two or three to prevent leakage. Slowly, loosen the remaining bolts to allow the fluid to escape from the transmission pan into the drain pan. Remove the transmission pan from the transmission.
Remove the pan gasket. Remove the transmission filter. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
Install a new filter, gasket and re-install the transmission pan bolts. Do not overtighten.

Try the 'How-To-Guides' feature on this website for the transmission servicing details. Try the many on-line auto parts sources, such as; www.RockAuto.com or www.autopartswarehouse.com for the replacement parts.

    Driveaxle replacement cost
    Need replacement cost

    • Jimm
      11/22/2011 Jimm
The replacement drive axle assembly cost from around $46.00 to around $54.00 - for the CV axle assembly itself. Then factor the labor charge- probably around 2.0 -3.0 hours - maybe $200.00 to $250.00 for labor.

Try the 'Estimate Cost' feature this website for the rough repair cost estimate. Try the many on-line auto parts sources, such as; www.RockAuto.com or www.autopartswarehouse.com for the replacement parts.

Please help with this mysterious code 0500. It is drving me crazy.
My vehicle is throwing this code. I have already had the driving sensor replaced. The thing it is doing while driving, it will just lock up, and when you put it into Neutral. You can't even push it, but later when you clear the code you can drive it for a little ...

P0500 means Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction. P0500 indicates that the vehicle’s speed as read by the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is not working efficiently.

      Possible Causes:

      Defective vehicle speed sensor
Damaged or broken wire in the vehicle speed sensor circuit

      Possible Solutions:

      Reset the trouble code
      Clean the electrical connector
Repair or replace the wires/connection in the vehicle speed sensor circuit
      Replace the vehicle speed sensor

See if the brake lights are working. The brake light switch is the logic behind the shift interlock.

the brake lights are working! again, i did get a check engine light code p1780 which is the pnp or park neutral position sensor.
    • HouseCallAuto
      10/12/2011 HouseCallAuto
Ok, I agree. The code P1780 has to be solved first before looking further at the shift interlock problem. May be related.

Check to see if there is anything happening with the lights in the dash. Are the lights dim or maybe a filament broken in a bulb, etc. Check to see if the wires in the trunk lid hinge area are touching. Check the voltage supply from the Park/Neutral position switch at the ECM. Only one input should show 12v at a time.
      Potential Causes:

Park Neutral Position (PNP) Switch — Moisture in the Park/Neutral position switch.
Wires — Wires touching in the trunk lid area. Check for damaged wiring in harness to Neutral position switch above the trans. Check the wiring near the trunk hinge area, in particular the white with black tracer wire.

If the ECM sees the slightest amount of voltage supply on a wire, it will think the shift lever is in that position (as low as 0.3v is seen as 12v by the ECM).
