There is a good chance that the neutral safety switch has a problem. Not a sure thing but it the wiring for all gear positions goes through this switch and if the engine control module gets a crazy signal it will not allow the cars tranny to operate correctly at all.

The transmission whines sometimes and shifts slowly until warmed up. Should I change the oil and filter?
My 98 GS 400 has 200K miles and the transmission has never been serviced. The guys at the parts place say that changing the transmission oil and filter may create problems and possibly cause the transmission to fail. What should I do?

If it is not slipping but just having long delayed shifts, I would leave the fluid alone, unless you can be ok with the possibility that after you change the oil that the tranny might begin slipping. Changing the oil and filter could also fix it though. I can't say what will happen. Changing oil is not supposed to be a bad thing, unfortunately I have seen transmissions fail after the oil change. That does not rule out that maybe the slipping would have happened anyway. Its your call. Nobody seems to have a full understanding of this topic. Maybe a tranny rebuilder might have his own opinion.

Is it normal for car to lose acceleration power after major repairs, post accident?
Hello. I was recently in a pretty bad accident. Between the body work and the mechanical, the repairs came to $10,330. People have told me that the car will never be the same, but the thing I'm noticing now is pretty disturbing. It will drive normal for a few ...

Was the repair work under any warranty? If yes, then simply contact the auto body repair shop to describe the issue and have them fix / repair the problems.

Yeah it definately sounds shady to me.Never ever let your insurance company, etc send you to a body shop of their choice cause all theyre tryin to do is get out cheap.Im surprised the car wasnt considered totaled at that price.Think whoever sent you there is in cahoots with that body shop for sure.Id be afraid to take it back to them after what they done to you.And no the car shouldnt have engine problems unless they didnt repair an engine part which was damaged in the wreck..Normally youll have an issue with the fitment of body parts, paint defect, car not bein able to be aligned properly due to an under repaired frame or suspension part improperly repaired. Those are the typical issues that occur after extensive repair work was done or not done.I would call the better business bureau about this deal

My car makes a rattling sound when it's turned on. It gets louder as I pick up speed.
Car has an oil leak that is minor

There is something obviously wrong inside the engine, that’s for sure. You could elaborate on other factors and parameters which pertain to the sound. Where exactly is the sound coming from? Is it from the engine or transmission, which part of the engine or transmission, etc. It is difficult to judge by just ‘rattling’ and need more light on that. However, you can refer and select your vehicle for detailed troubleshooting and maintenance diagrams/manuals.

Check the exhaust barrel and elswhere around exhaust for loose mountings. Determine if rattle is inside or outside. If the baffle inside the exhaust is broken it will rattle, and accelerating could cause it to increase.

If noise sounds like its coming from underneath the car,the heat shield on the catalytic converter is a common source which causes rattling noise.Loose torque converter bolts also cause this noise. If the noise is repetitive, and if it increases or decreases with speed, rather than bein a constant steady noise which doesnt change with speed, itl be a component that is spinning or rotating, instead of just something thats bangin up against another part creating a rattle

How can i get the speed meter gear in the transmission (differential)
280000 mls it is giving speed meter code it is shifting ok but the speed meter is not working the sensor is good but gear in the differential is bad
    • Jimm
      5/4/2013 Jimm
The vehicle speed sensor (with speedometer gear) is mounted to the transmission. The sensor and gear are located on top of differential (sensor installed at slight angle -directly below throttle body). Be aware there are two speed sensors designs on this 3.0L V6 engine - either two terminals or three terminals.
Try the many on-line auto parts sources, such as; or for the replacement parts. For example, they (Rock Auto) list the transmission output speed sensor from around $59.00 for your vehicle.

Have you checked the automatic transmission fluid level? It sounds like it may be low. Your transmission may need to be drained and refilled. Have you been following the Lexus maintenance schedule?
