Shifter cable is probably binding up or pinching. It will be a pain to do, but you can try to sray some WD40 down the cable and see if that helps. If that doesn't help, look over the cable really good to see if you can find where it might be kinking up, if that doesn't work, look into replacing the cable.

Not much info here. My first question is if the car is parked on a hill without the emergency brake on? This will put alot of strain on the shifter. All I've done myself to get out of this situation is to pull down on the shifter REALLY HARD! It feels like you're going to break something but it comes loose. Of course, this would only work if the problem is being parked on a hill. Otherwise, need more info! If that is the problem, the solution is to pull into the parking space, set the parking brake and THEN put the shifter in park. That will prevent the weight of the car from putting strain on the shifter.

Try to check the condition of your brake light switch. If it is faulty it can't send a signal to disable the park lock mechanism.

Sounds like a problem I had with my 96 Sephia & it was the shifter bypass. To the right of the shifter is a small round slot where the shifter lock bypass is located. Pop / Pry the cover off the slot & insert a long handled small flat head screw driver until you connect with the bypass. This is where I'm having trouble..I don't remember if you turn it clockwise or counter clockwise.. however you'll feel it turn, it's a real gentle click (not audible) This will release the shifter. The info was in my owners manual, maybe check yours. ?

Why would my transmission fluid mix with the coolant?
We have purchased a new radiator and replaced it, however when we filled the radiator with coolant it mixed with transmission fluid. If this a leak in the transmission line could you help me with where it might be?

The transmission cooler inside the radiator ( dead on arrival ) could been damaged and its causing the transmission fluid to leak.Repair it immediately or $$$$ will spent for a new transmission.
Note: replace the transmission fluid, it could been contaminated with the coolant.

i agree with cvo.....test the radiator////with tranny lines off, plug lower radiator hose, fill radiator with water, and pressure test radiator (15-18 lbs)...while keeping an eye on the tranny line connections. if water comes out of the tranny connectors, the radiator is shot and must be replaced.. you can do this with the radiator in or out of the car.... besure to replace the transmissin fluid.........jl

      1. At the park position switch on the shifter in the center console, check the condition of the ground on the Green/White wire (Red/Yellow on the harness side of the connector) with the connector plugged in. Backprobe the terminal with the shifter in the Park position.

      2. If there is no ground on the Green/White wire, ground it to determine if this action causes the key to release.

      3. Check for ground on the Black wire in the same connector.

      4. Check the shifter adjustment and verify that it is returning all the way to the Park position.

This code gets set if there's a problem in the hardwire for the "Check Engine" request between the transmission and engine controllers. Probably just a loose or corroded terminal.
The battery has a 4 amp draw on it also when you pull the ECU and BTN fuse the draw goes away and resets the code above.

Jimm, are you talking battery terminal? when you say-
[ Probably just a loose or corroded terminal. ]

It is probably a bad Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or VSS Drive Gear. Read fault codes with a code reader. Might have a P0501 or a P0502

    Should i flush the transmission?
fluid dark, no shifting problems. 70,000 miles
    • Jimm
      6/22/2011 Jimm
Yes, the transmission should be serviced at around 24 - 36,000 - check the owners manual and maintenance guide for specific recommendations. The service should include a transmission fluid drain, and refill along with a new filter (if the transmission is equipped with one). A flush may or may not properly clean the transmission.
      6/22/2011 Bill
I would not advise flushing, drain and fill plus new filter as Jimm says.

I am going to run the tranny fluid from the supply line into a bucket while filling with new for a home flush. is it ok
cant take it to a shop. i will replace the filter as well. i wanted to just run the vehicle and flush the fluid while adding new fluid until the new fluid came out.

Make sure you use the correct specification transmission oil. Do not assume it is regular Dexron III.
