Is the engine light on? Also if you pull back the carpet where the passengers feet would be, the ecu (cars brain) should be located there. If i remember correctly when you turn the car on there is a blinking red light on the ecu. Count the # of times it blinks and when the light stays on longer than a blink means next #. eventually it will put out the code and repeat it over and over. If no codes, check your fuel pressure. Might be clogged filter

When you say burning oil badly, how much? It is possible if you're burning that much oil, you may
have oil fouled plugs. I would start there first.

My civic has an idling problem. The idle constantly revs up and down between 1000 and 2000 rpm.
It does'nt do it with the a/c on there a way to adjust this myself?
    • John's Auto Repair
It is possible that the closed throttle switch needs to be adjusted. However it may be part of the
Throttle Position Sensor. You can adjust it yourself. But do need at least a Volt/Ohm Meter.
Let me know if you have one.

Engine died while driving without warning and won't start
After it stalled or shut off when trying to start it sounds different l like maybe weaker or not as deep as it usually sounds possible timing issue
    • HouseCallAuto
      2/8/2014 HouseCallAuto
The timing belt broke or jumped. that sound you here is the lack of compression. Not sure but the worry here is if you have an interference engine which would mean you now have bent valves. This is easy to look up.

What is the best way to diagnose this? Remove valve pan?
    • HouseCallAuto
      2/8/2014 HouseCallAuto
You have to remove the upper plastic timing cover and check the belt alignment by lining up the marks on the lower crank pulley and the mark on the camshaft gear. If you are not going to do this job yourself you may as well not bother going through this. The oil pan does not get removed.

My car wont start due to immobilizer light not coming on at all
the engine is rolling over and i can hear the fuel pump when the key is turned to II position

Most likely needs the Immobilizer Receiver Unit that surrounds the ignition lock cylinder. Available from Honda only and after replacement the keys have to be reprogrammed by the Honda dealer or a locksmith that has the equipment to do this, not all locksmiths do. There are some checks that can be done but this will require removing the steering column trim covers to access the Immobilizer Receiver Unit. I will detail these checks but you will need a 12 volt test light and ability to disassemble. Just ask me. Check fuses first though, specifically fuse # 21 (7.5 amp) and fuse # 7 (10 amp), both located in the instrument panel fuse panel. Mke sure that there is battery voltage on both sides of the fuse with key on.
      2/4/2014 AutoMD Member
All fuses were checked and they were good. The immobilizer was also changed and the immobilizer connector was checked to see if it was getting sufficient voltage.

And was it checked at the brown wire to see if was receiving a sufficient ground? And there are two other wires that have to be checked that go to the ecm to be sure that they are not grounded anyplace. Do you want this add'l information or have you covered all those details as well?
      2/5/2014 AutoMD Member
No it was only checked for voltage. I will have those other checks done today.

Trouble Code: P0420 = Catalyst Efficiency Below Normal (Bank 1)

      Possible Causes:

Air leaks at the exhaust manifold or in the exhaust pipes
Catalytic converter is damaged, contaminated or has failed
Front HO2S (heated oxygen sensor) or rear HO2S is contaminated with fuel or moisture
Front HO2S and/or the rear HO2S is loose in the mounting hole
Front HO2S older (aged) than the rear HO2S (HO2S is lazy)

The parts are readily available from these many on-line sources,,,,, - to list only a few possibilities. For example, they (RockAuto) list the oxygen sensors (upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter) from around $27.50 (each) for your vehicle.
The oxygem sensors are easily replaced - check the 'How-To-Guides' feature on the AutoMD website for the specific steps. Be sure to change the O2 sensors in pairs due to mileage / age / wear considerations.

Your 87 Honda was built with 2 possible engines that are both 2.0 liter. One has a carburetor and the other has fuel injection. Which do you have? When it stalls and will not start, have you confirmed that there is ignition spark?

Why does my car fie after driving a half of a mile ?
I start and drive around the block and it just dies. I changed the timing belt, and the coil pack but still keeps on stalling out.

What damage will driving without coolant do to an engine?
    car won't start
    • AutoMD Member
      1/21/2014 AutoMD Member
The engine will continue to heat up until it melts the pistons, warps the head, and seizes the engine. I did this once. When I looked into my oil filler cap, a bright red light was shining in my face.

I don't think that he is meaning that there is no coolant as in empty. I think he means there is water or mostly water.
    • AutoMD Member
      1/25/2014 AutoMD Member
If as in no coolant then you run the possibility of freezing and busting the block during winter. Extra corrosion in the cooling components and a lower boiling point. if in case your wondering why mix water and coolant water helps transfer heat and gives it water tension. As for running an engine without coolant i wouldnt do it!!

If you mean the engine overheated, then usually the first thing to go is the head gasket, then
the head and it only gets worst from there! Especially with this engine.

Why does my car go up to 2000 rpms when idle?
The cars rpms shoot up when the car is idle at a complete stop. It continues to rev on its own when stopped. The car does this everytime it is stopped.

Either the engine is very low on coolant or the idle speed control is junk.

My car won't start, When i turn the key nothing happens. No lights come on no radio. No sound. Only the hazards come on
Yesterday i needed a jump to get it started after it seemed to run fine then i got gas 10 min later and cut the car off and then it wouldn't start. No lights came on except the hazards. So we took my battery and they said i needed a new one so we got a new used one ...

I would say you have an open main fuse in the underhood fuse panel.Check and see if fuses 39 and 40 have battery voltage at the fuse. if there is no battery voltage there then the ELD is junk (electric load detector). If there is no battery voltage reading at the heavy wire at the alternator (there should be at all times) then the main fuse #41 which is a 60 amp fuse is open.

97 Civic Ex tries to crank, but will not start. Where to start troubleshooting?
This problem just arose today out of nowhere. I wasn't having any previous problems with the car. My fuel level was pretty low so when I went outside and it wouldn't start, my initial thought was I had ran it too low and didn't have enough fuel for it to fire. So I ...

Why does my engine have a rough idle until it reaches 2000 rpm
Mileage 184,866. Engine feels like it's missing or has a dead cylinder on acceleration until it reaches 2000 rpm. Happens when hot & no engine light is on.

First step - have the stored fault codes or check engine light scanned - for free - at any local auto parts store; Advance Auto, Auto Zone, NAPA. Then, post a reply as 'add answer' with the specific code for more assistance. There may be a fault code stored in the OBD memory which may not be displayed as a check engine light.

Possible Causes of Engine Hesitation or Stumble:

Dirty fuel injectors (cleaning the injectors often fixes this)
      Dirty air filter (change filter)
Dirty / clogged fuel filter (change filter)
Bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
      Bad TPS (throttle position) sensor
Bad or dirty MAF (mass airflow) sensor
Low fuel pressure (leaky fuel pressure regulator or weak fuel pump)
Vacuum leaks (intake manifold, vacuum hoses, throttle body, EGR valve)
Bad gasoline (fuel contaminated with water or too much alcohol)

Sometimes, what feels like a hesitation is actually ignition misfire rather than lean misfire. The causes of ignition misfire may include:

      Dirty or worn spark plugs
      Bad plug wires
      Weak ignition coil
      Wet plug wires

I believe your noise may be related to this repair that was done with the water pump / belt / tensioner. The tranny fluid being overfull a quart wouldn't do anything and if it is more than a quart I have no data on that.
