The check engine light is located on the dash and stays on if the computerized engine control system detects an engine performance or emissions problem.

First step - have the stored fault codes or check engine light scanned - for free - at any local auto parts store; Advance Auto, Auto Zone, NAPA, etc. Then, post a reply as 'add answer' with the specific code for more assistance. There may be a fault code stored in the OBD memory which may not be displayed as a check engine light. There are literally hundreds of possible fault codes and therefore numerous reasons for the MIL condition.

This step is important - retrieving the stored fault code and relaying this detail - will provide good information to assist in diagnosing and repairing the issue you are having.

Have a 96 geo tracker motor blew up..got anouther motor out of a 94 tracker,,both motors are 16v motors..
my question is the 94 motor has no crank sensor the 96 has one...i know the sencor is in the oil pump. can i put the oil pump off a 96,16v onto a 94 16 value motor so i can have the crank sencor......or did they make a 94 motor oil pump with a crank sencor in ...

The crankshaft position sensor is located in the distributor - not the oil pump. The '94 engine does not use the position sensor, but the '96 engine does.
Best to use the same year engine as the replacement - too many differences.

Why does Red Engine Elec System light go on intermittently & the car engine die?
212,000 miles. 5 speed manual transmission. 2 wks ago, driving at 30mph, the car had a slight jerk & red light came on & off for about 5 seconds. About 10 minutes later the same happened. Yesterday (2-1-14) I was driving for about 10 minutes at 20mph & the ...

I need to know what light is on. There are no lights that say "Engine Electrical System". I do not want to have to guess what light you are referring to. I suspect that what is happening is the engine is intermittently beginning to stall out and when the rpm drops below a minimum the red oil pressure light will flicker or turn on and off. The cause of what you detail may be a bad ignition coil.

Hummer converter is part of the automobile exhaust system, placed between the engine and the muffler. It reduces the toxicity of emissions from internal combustion engines.

Out of the blue the car wouldn't start. Initially it tried to turn over but diminished to a single click and buzz.
I've replaced the starter and battery and when I hotwire the starter from the battery it won't start. My friend said it sounded like fuel was getting to the engine when I turn the key..

    Hesitation and lack of power
replaced egr valve, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, wire. check engine light on P0300.

      P0300 = Random cylinder misfire

      For the misfires

It may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

      Faulty spark plug or wire
      Faulty coil (pack)
      Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
      Faulty fuel injector
      Burned exhaust valve
      Faulty catalytic converter(s)
      Running out of fuel
      Poor compression
      Defective computer
      Possible Solutions

If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

I believe that the Suzuki Sidekick is the same as a Tracker. Here is a TSB that seems to detail what you are experiencing. Can't say if this fix is a sure thing. Try reading it. here is the link to it >> http://suzuki.workshop-manuals.com/.../index.php

Although this document talks about possible flooding as a cause for this hard start, while you say that your fix is to add fuel so not sure here. Don't overreact to this document if it don't fit what you have goin on.

Why do i keep getting this whistling sound from my engine?
The whistle is there while driving and sometimes when i first start the vehicle. It will not stop whistling on it's on. It seem to stop when i turn the heater off and on.other times it's just whistle the whole while driving.

First step - raise the hood while the engine is off and cold. Visibly check all the vacuum hoses and tubes routing from the engine. The whistle noise sounds when there is a slight vacuum leak - such as a vacuum hose has a small crack.

Then as next step - start the engine, and if the vacuum leak or cracked / damaged hose is no yet located - use a mild water / soap solution in a spray bottle - spray the same vacuum hoses - while moving / jiggling the hoses one at a time.
The idea here is to induce a change in how the engine runs; if the spray and monentary seal causes the engine to run differently - then you have found the leak.

Another test involves using a vacuum guage attached to the engine manifold vacuum (say off the intake manifold) to view the engine vacuum at idle speed - then apply the same tests as described above.

My first question is, WHY? Does the points distributor have centrifical and vacuum advance?
If so you would still need to add a balast resistor to the coil Pos. terminal.

Why does my car's engine hesitate and run rough only when under power?
320,000 miles - I have replaced the ECM and MAP sensor. OBD 1 trouble codes after replacing those components have returned to 'code 12 = no failures' yet the engine still hesitates and runs rough while driving but idles and runs smoothly throughout the entire RPM ...

Possible Causes of Engine Hesitation or Stumble:

Dirty fuel injectors (cleaning the injectors often fixes this)
      Dirty air filter (change filter)
Dirty / clogged fuel filter (change filter)
Bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
      Bad TPS (throttle position) sensor
Bad or dirty MAF (mass airflow) sensor
Low fuel pressure (leaky fuel pressure regulator or weak fuel pump)
Vacuum leaks (intake manifold, vacuum hoses, throttle body, EGR valve)
Bad gasoline (fuel contaminated with water or too much alcohol)

Sometimes, what feels like a hesitation is actually ignition misfire rather than lean misfire. The causes of ignition misfire may include:

      Dirty or worn spark plugs
      Bad plug wires
      Weak ignition coil
      Wet plug wires

Engine runs smooth when idling....under power it seems to "misfire",,,only while driving, not sitting still...
225000 miles....happens when engine is under power...smooth when idling.. happens all the time..no warning lights...all gauges are ok.... have changed spark plug wires....did not help

Hi bmelton59, What about the distributor cap and the spark plugs ,a cracked distributor cap could cause such aproblem or defective plugs .Defective ignition points if it applies to your model.Faulty ignition coil or loose wires that shake with the vibration of the vehicle ,faulty ignition system check all wires and connections apply dielectric grease.Check for vacuum leaks at the intake manifold ,vacuum booster hoses etc.Dirty caburettor or fuel injectors .Also low ,or uneven compression pressures in the cylinders requiring a compression test and leak-down test to see .

Oil pan change and the headache of getting it off.
changed oil pan didnt realize what a job it would be. Will it hurt anything that it sat with oil pan off for 3 weeks, before could put everything back together?

No.Main thing is to make sure the rotating assembly and anything exposed is free from all dust, dirt, etc. before reinstalling oil pan.If it has a distributer, and if it has high miles-I would consider installing a new oil pump while youre there just for extra piece of mind knowing you wont have to worry about replacing it down the road. The motor will be wore out before a new oil pump will but thats totally your choice to make.
