Why did the speedometer stop working at the same time the car will not shift out of 1st gear?
There were no other signs of transmission problems prior to this occurring. The speedometer stopped working and it does not shift out of first gear at all, but will go into reverse.

The car is too new for any knowledge about a cause. I'm sure the dealer sees it often and will know the cause right away. Older models needed to have shifter assemblies replaced, many under warranty for similar issues. Take to dealer for quickest turnaround time. This is NOT a DIY type repair and will require the use of a factory scan tool.

If you replace the input shaft speed sensor and the output shaft speed sensor you *may* solve this. I suggest you do this yourself though because if it doesn't you wu=ill need about $1800 to pay for rebuilding the tranny. The sensors are very cheap and not hard to replace and besides even if it don't solve it the new sensors will get used when the tranny is redone.

Hi pfeiffer4, Check with a dodge dealership. In 2006 the transducer, solenoid, filter valve and gasket were replaced on my dodge ram van, and it came to : $267 for parts and $247 for labour. The miles on my dodge ram was 81,395 at the time so it seems to be common with dodge.I'm looking at a Bob Wilson Dodge receipt . I keep the receipts for all my repairs.

Loud roar from the rear end.
This is a 4 wheel drive with 3.5 12 bolt rear end. I have replaced both axle bearings and both diff. bearings and could not tell any difference. Seems like you can feel a grind but hear a roar. They say it started about a year and a half ago and all they ever had ...

Carrier bearings then is all that is left. remove rear diff cover, unbolt differential case ass'y (4 bolts) and remove with pry bar and don't disturb the threaded side bearing adjustment. mark it's location with whiteout so you can move them back if you turn them slightly. Check the bearings for roughness with your hand after the diff case is out on ground. You will know if they are bad. You will feel it and hear it.

If you follow the recommended service and maintenance intervals as outlined in the owners / maintenance manual for your vehicle - you will be on track. For example, when you change the fuel fllter as recommended - then no fuel system 'flush' is needed or required. Same advice for the power steering system - just follow recommended fluid changes periodically. Likewise for the automatic transmission - simple fluid and flter changes are recommended as outlined in the owners / maintenance manuals.

As a general rule - avoid the system flushes as a 'service' as these generally do not clean properly. Especially with components like the; transmission - where there is a filter (filter plus gasket) to be changed out when the fluid is replaced. If maximum component and vehicle service life are the goals, avoid fluid flushes. Think of the various system flushes as designed to flush one major component - your wallet.

If any repair shop keeps pushing this type service, recommend for you to find a new, and more reputable repair shop.

Fluid and filter change in my area is around 150.00-200.00 This includes changing the transmission filter and flushing out the fluid. That is the service I would recommend.

Check the many on-line auto parts sources, such as;,, and - to list only a few sources. For example, they (Rock Auto) list the transmission filter kit (filter plus gaskets) from around $8.00 for your vehicle.
With transmission fluid around $3.00 per quart - the entire transmission fluid and filter change should cost no more than $30.00 to $40.00 - if you performed the task yourself.

A transmission fluid change using a machine like a TRANSTECH is being unfairly called a flush which has a bad connotation. Actually the fluid change this way is the only method to completely replace ALL old and contaminated transmission oil. Dropping the pan does not empty the converter and only changes about half the oil. It uses the internal pump in the transmission to move the fluid and does not add any add'l "flush" pressure. It is an excellent service to do every 40K miles and can mean the difference between buying a new tranny ever for your car. It is not a good thing to do (to change fluid) for the first time at a high mileage or when you are already experiencing transmission slippage issues. It is just as important to use the correct fluid specification. I have been fixing cars for 36 years and I have found that replacing the internal filter in a tranny is overrated. If the tranny filter were found to be clogged then that tranny is junk no matter. In normal healthy use the filter looks almost like the new filter you are about to install. That being said, changing the fluid is far more important than the filter and then the add'l labor of removing and then re-installing the tranny oil pan is eliminated. A tranny fluid replacement using a machine is about $180 depending on what fluid is used because some of the fluids are $10 per quart and the machine is loaded with 12 quarts.
