Why does my truck shut off when I put it into reverse?
Every time I put my truck into reverse, it shuts off. It works fine in any other gear that I put it into. but automatically will shut off when I try to use it in reverse. I have a small transmission leak, but there is more then enough transmission fluid in my truck.

Idle air control valve ? ( reverse use more power than forward ).

Check the vehicle for fault codes to see if there are any sensors were involved to the malfunction of the engine.

1.Local auto parts stores such as Autozone ( not in California) or Advance Auto parts will scan and retrieve any diagnostic trouble codes ( dtc ) stored in the powertrain control module for free of charge..

      2. has the code reader for less than $ 20.21 dollars + shipping
Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for OBDII Vehicles

3.Re-post the dtc's in here " answer question " for further assistance.

Note: we need the dtc's to identify the sensor, there are a dozen different sensors to operate the car.

Visit this site and see all the different sensors.

First step, check the transmission fluid level and refill as necessary.

Next, check the transmission shift linkages for any looseness, if it appeared it is in order, then the forward planetary gear set may be damaged or broken. There are two planetary gear sets, the forward and the reverse. The transmission will need to be rebuilt or exchanged with remanufactured unit.

The parts are readily available; try these on-line sources;,,,, - to list only a few possibilities. In fact (they) Rock Auto list a remanufactured transmission assembly from around $800.00 (minus core exchange) for your vehicle.

The transmission can often be rebuilt for a fraction of the cost of a new or remanufactured unit - depending upon the exact damage / issue with the old transmission.

Several things can cause this and it happens for a reason. The computer puts the transmission in 2nd gear (limp home) so as not to damage anything more than it has already. The check engine light should also be on which will give you a code as to why the transmission is stuck in 2nd gear. I can help you with this problem but need the code number. After I have the number I can give you specific directions on how to repair it. You will need to go to for the information though as I can't post it here

My car won't shift into Park or Reverse, but will go into Neutral and Drive.

What you need to do next is to get a code reader and plug it in and read fault codes and do this before you go disconnecting any electrical connectors which may set false codes. Post codes here.

My check engine light is on and the codes are P0712 P0700 and P0562.
The check engine light is always on, but the problem is intermittent.sometimes the car wont shift gears. I called a repair shop and told him the problem/codes and was told the solenoid pack is bad and it would cost $450.0 to replace. Is it possible that this could ...

The P0562 is saying quite clearly that you have low voltage sometimes. The typical cause of a P0562 is a bad alternator. The P0700 itself simply means that there is a fault code stored for the transmission, and in this case the code is a P0712, and a P0712 means that the Transmission Fluid temperature sensor senses ..guess what?? - low voltage

And if you can do it yourself, check and solve the cause of the low voltage - may be a bad alternator
And I would also replace both the input shaft speed sensor and the output shaft speed sensor becayuse I know the sensors are cheap to buy and are on the outside of the tranny and cause lots of issues with shifting. Not saying that you don't need solenoid packs, but maybe not because the codes do not point to that directly.

New clutch, pressure plate, throw out Bering replaced.slave cyl, Clutch pressure plate throwout barring master
Master cylinder replaced. Won't go into gear with clutch pressed. No bleed nip., air somewhere in system. Help
    • HouseCallAuto
      11/20/2013 HouseCallAuto
Even though this system does not have bleeder screws to bleed the system, air can be bled out if the master cylinder is not mounted and held in a way such that the line end of the master cylinder is downward. Push the rod of the slave cylinder in to push all fluid into the master cylinder. This should push any trapped air out of the system where it escapes out the top of the master cylinder.

Thank you. Will definitely do this.

The switch isn't likely to solve it. The transmission likely has mechanical problems.
