First step - check the engine oil to be sure it's filled to the correct level. Next step, check the engine oil pressure switch and pressure sending unit. Also, check the oil warning light, switch, sensor and wiring / connections.

Prime a starting fluid through the throttle body, if the engine starts, check the fuel system pressure.

      The Fuel System Pressure

50-60 PSI (Pounds per Square Inch)Vent the fuel tank vapors by loosening the fuel cap then disconnect the electric fuel pump relay plug, and start the engine . Allow the engine to run until it runs out of fuel and stalls. After spinning the engine over for a period of (3) to(5) seconds, turn off the ignition switch and reconnect the electric fuel pump relay . Install a fuel pressure gauge in the fuel rail test port, and secure the fuel tank cap. With the ignition key in the on position, verify that no leaks are present and utilize the scan tool to energize the fuel pump. This will bring the system to a stabilized fuel pressure that can be visually verified on the gauge.

If the fuel system pressure isn't in the specifications, replace the fuel pump.

Plug in a code reader and post a reply with the specific fault codes. If no codes are stored, state that.

Any local auto parts store; Advance Auto, Auto Zone, NAPA - as example - can scan the OBD (on-board diagnostic) system for free for you.

      See this Stoplight Switch
For your 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.4L SFI DOHC 4cyl
      http://www.autozone.com/.../N-jtv89Z9cias

Stoplight switch directs current to the stop lights, cruise control, and shift interlock to turn them on or off
When not replaced, stop lights will run continually or not function, potentially causing premature bulb failure, safety issues and/or the transmission will not shift out of park

Try starting in Neutral. Check to make sure you have brake lights when applying the brakes (brake switch could be failed) This is Chryslers listed part number #4659676AC for the neutral safety switch, sometimes called a range switch. It would be listed under transmission sensors.
