With engine at operating temperature, feel both heater hoses. They should both be hot. If not
you probably have a clogged heater core. If both hoses are hot, you have a problem with the
temperature blend door actuator under the dash.

The check engine light doesn't have to be ON to store a fault code.

Check the vehicle for fault codes to see if there are any sensors were involved to the malfunction of the engine.

1.Local auto parts stores such as Autozone ( not in California) or Advance Auto parts will scan and retrieve any diagnostic trouble codes ( dtc ) stored in the powertrain control module for free of charge..

      2. has the code reader for less than $17.83 dollars + shipping
Autel MaxiScan MS300 CAN Diagnostic Scan Tool for OBDII Vehicles
3.Re-post the dtc's in here " answer question " for further assistance.

Note: we need the dtc's to identify the sensor, there are a dozen different sensors to operate the car.

Visit this site and see all the different sensors.

Note: for the headlights flickering, this is a symptom of a margin ( or bad ) alternator and the electrical test at local auto parts WILL NOT DETECT as a bad one.

My starter is spinning but not engaging the flywheel even with a boost. The starter and battery are less than a year old
Could the snow and salt be causing this?

If you hear the starter motor spinning but no gear to gear engagement then the starter motor is likely junk. The only other cause would be an open circuit where the heavy battery cable connects to the starter which is doubtful because this heavy cable runs direct from the positive battery terminal to the starter.

You did the right thing to replace the egr valve for the P0404 code. This is a very common repair on this engine. OK, now you have the P0401 which is insufficient EGR flow. Did you erase this P0401 yet and drive the car again and see if it returns?

My vehicle runs perfectly fine in drive and reverse, but when I get to a stop light and press the brake my car feels... it wants to stall but it never does. When I press the gas to drive it jerks a bit and then it rides fine again. My transmission fluid was about 20% gone so I replaced it. But ultimately, I'm not sure if this is a transmission issue or if there's something ...

our electronic control module is not receiving data on the idle circuit properly, could be a idle air control valve or maybe the rubber hose between the throttle body intake and the air cleaner has been damaged ,thus bypassing the mass air flow sensor and air sensor. When repairing a transmission sometimes it torques this hose and ruptures it by the act of raising it to work on, but not always, so you will have to investigate further

Where is the trans. sensor locaded
ck. engine lt. came on. Code P0340

P0340 = Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

This indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit.
Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don't just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.

A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
      • a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
      • the camshaft position sensor may have failed
      • the PCM may have failed
      • there exists an open circuit
      • the crankshaft position sensor may have failed

With a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
      • Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
      • Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
      • Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
      • Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
      • Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
      • Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
      • Diagnose/replace the PCM as required

The parts are readily available from these many on-line sources,,,,, - to list only a few possibilities. In fact, they (RockAuto) list the camshaft position sensor from around $30.00 for your vehicle. This would be; Airtex / Wells part # 2R1.

      Cam position sensor replacement steps;
Open the air cleaner holder by undoing the two snaps, then loosening the air pipe fastener with the screwdriver (or a socket wrench) and gently pushing the hose off. Take out the filter, unplug the little hose on the left hand side (assuming you are leaning over the grille and radiator), and wiggle/pull the air cleaner box up.
The air cleaner box is not bolted in, but you should take note of how it’s positioned now, because you’ll need to push it back in later. It should pop out with a little muscle/wiggle.

Don’t be too concerned if there’s a little oil on the bottom of the air cleaner housing. That probably came from the crankcase ventilation system — which is also why you have that little hose that you had to pop out.

Once you’ve done this, you will see and be able to easily access the camshaft position sensor ... if you don’t have a turbo car. It’s right on the side of the engine near the top and is pretty unmistakable as the only large sensor attached to the engine.

Does it start now that it has cooled down. if not then you may have a warped head and blown head gasket. Or worse. Does the engine have compression?

Replacing win module. Is this the only reason my car want start?
Mileage is 96321. On 01-06-14 a new battery was installed on car. Service person told me win module was going out but I would be able to drive car. They could order the part but, it had to be ordered from Star and did not know when the part would arrive, but he ...

This is a dealer only fix. Even if someone were to replace the WIN module it would need to be programmed by the dealer's equipment. Call a different dealer if you have another within reasonable driving distance.

You either need a starter or ignition switch or starter relay. You can test for 12 volts at the starter solenoid. Should have power to the small wire on starter solenoid when ignition switch is turned to start. If there is power to the starter and it is not turning then replace starter. If no power to starter then test the switch and relay circuits. You should also check for burned out fuses and loose or corroded battery cables.

Try your other key. Inside the key is a transponder. If the transponder in your key is bad you will have a no crank situation.

My battery post keeps corroding and has been cleaned and greased several times.
When it gets too corroded my car wont start, but I still have power to my lights & radio. What could be causing this?
    • HouseCallAuto
      1/6/2014 HouseCallAuto
If the battery post has been cleaned and greased several times yet sometimes you have a no-start condition with other power accessories still functional, then I believe you have another cause for the no-start condition. The next time it is a no start, someone has to check and see if the starter is receiving a 12 volt start signal at the small wire on the starter. Maybe the starter is failing. As far as the battery corrosion, if it is that bad that it reappears soon after cleaning then the battery has an acid leak at the post maybe and battery has to be replaced.
