My 1993 Chevy s10 4x4 in one day lost all gears except 1st and reverse. What is wrong?
As far as I could tell my truck was running and shifting fine. On my way to work when it was time for it to shift into 3rd- it wouldn't. On my way home I lost 2nd. And it's been parked ever since.

the speed sensor is in the transfer case upper right close to the back of it. i dont think the speed sensor is giving you that problem though all it does is run the speedometer. how did the fluid look when you changed it?

What are the cost estimates on rear pinion seal replacement
Firestone said there is leaking around the differential in front of hub, and differential fluid is "milkshake" in consistency; they can't or won't do the repair.

it's an hour job like 12 dollars for the seal and 40 or so for oil. it could possably be leaking because of a bad pinion bearing but i doudt it unless you leave it in 4wd all of the time.

Thanks, I hope that is all that it will cost. took it to an independent shop yesterday and the owner implied putting in a new/used differential if they found metal shavings from excessive wear. I would think they would offer a gear kit instead

first check the transmission fluid wipe the dipstick on a white rag or paper towel. it should be red i'm guessing this time it will be burnt, it sounds like it needs rebuilt. revers requires the highest pressure and is all most always the first to go. if the fluid isnt burnt check the kick down cable that goes from the throttle body to the transmission the little adjuster on the top can break and if not caught in time will smoke the transmission because it runs the trans at low pressure when it breaks and lets it slip.

I had already did all that you've mentioned and I even changed the filter and fluid. I had it checked out and it was the "Governor" that was defected. I had it replaced and it shifts fine now. Thank you for your input and assist!!

I had a problem similar to this on my s10 blazer. It turned out to be that the electronic shift motor was bad. But before condemning it you should have it diagnosed. Check wiring, the switch itself, and the module. The shift motors going bad on this car is a common problem.
