Speedo quit, how to diagnose problemRichard Colburn - 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 6/29/2010-
6/29/2010 HouseCallAutoThe easy way it would be diagnosed as either a vehicle speed sensor vs a bad instrument panel cluster (GM has known issues with the IPC going bad) is with a scanner hooked up to read live data. The scanner would be looked at in the mph category and if it reads mph while you are moving and the speedo is not, then that is a bad IPC. If the mph reads -0- like the speedo the the VSS is bad. Someone will have to perform this simple test for you at a local shop or you could look at the specs and functions of scanners that are reasonably priced to see if they can read live data and in particular, MPH from the VSS. You could also see if there is an IPC code stored but again - special scanner.
Another tip is that if the VSS is the cause, it always affects the way the transmission shifts. Another tip is if the cruise control is inoperative and worked before then that would point to bad VSS. So, if shifting normal like always and cruise control works and you have speedo not working at the same time - bad IPC. GM has been replacing these on a campaign at a very reduced cost so call the local GM dealer if the IPC is bad because YOU will not be able to replace it as it needs to be programmed to work. The data in the old cluster is uploaded into the new one.

6/29/2010 BobbyThis sounds like a work van how much weight is it carrying all the time? It sounds like an internal problem and its slipping when the oil gets warm and thinner. Did the lucas treatment help at all even for a short period of time? It may be time to rebuild it again, was teh torque converter replaced when you rebuilt or was that left alone? -

Truck has 150 thousand miles on the transmission fluid. Will it harm the transmission if I change the fluid now.Ronald D Wallis - 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 - Transmissions & Drivetrains - 6/28/2010I have heard it will do harm if it is changed now and the filter. Can a person change 4 qts first and run it 5000 miles and then change all the fluid and the filter.-
6/28/2010 HouseCallAutoHere is my own rules regarding this. If the fluid is still RED, very Red, not brown or brownish red, then it's OK to change it, otherwise no touch.
6/28/2010 HouseCallAutowipe the stick on a white paper towel to decide.

6/28/2010 HouseCallAutoYes, I agree with Ron. It can be a bad universal joint. They have to be checked first. If the joints are good then the transfer case is bad.

6/22/2010 HouseCallAutoTry disconnecting the large electrical plug at the transmission, but not the range sensor plug. This plug is square. Near the selector lever. This will disable the Torque converter clutch.
