Most likely, a sensor in the traction control system has either intermittantly failed or experienced an electrical fault. The only way to find out what exactly is causing the problem is to take the vehicle by a repair shop, and have a qualified technician use a diagnostic computer to scan for "diagnostic trouble codes" inside the traction control control computer. The trouble codes will help the technician pinpoint the exact cause of intermittant traction control fault.

Where and how do you check transmission fluid?
transmission seems to slip when car is cold
      11/23/2010 MOONSTER_TOOLZ
There are two ways in checking the transmission fluid. One, if the transmission has a dipstick you can check the level and its condition by looking into its designated proper level; you only need to look for it in the engine compartment because it may be hidden somewhere. To change the fluid with a dipstick; let the transmission cold first and then raise the vehicle, remove the drain plug of the transmission (if equipped) or remove the bolts encircling the pan with pan underneath to catch the fluid; have it drain for awhile and remove the filter by pulling it out or removing the bolts that holding it; with the proper replacement kit, install new gasket or place a gasket maker around a cleaned oil pan; replace the filter and install the oil pan properly (the bolts installation sequence should crossing over). Do not tighten too much the bolts because they may break, using a torque wrench is advisable. Fill through the dipstick guide funnel the recommended type of transmission fluid into proper level. Have the engine started and check underneath for leaks, tighten the bolts a little bit if somehow leaking. When the engine is warm, check the level of the fluid and add to proper level.
If in-case the transmission does not have a dipstick, a check plug can be found in the transmission itself. raise the vehicle and examine the transmission, a plug (19mm - 21mm size) is located in the upper side of the transmission; have it remove while the engine and transmission is cold; the fluid will spill a little bit, it means it is full and if not, add fluid using a hand pump; the proper level should be just in the level of the plug hole. To change the fluid; remove the drain plug located at the bottom of the transmission; remove also the check plug and have it drain for a while until there's no fluid dripping at all; return the drain plug properly tight and fill in the fluid in the check plug; warm the transmission and test the gears.

Note: if there's no check plug or dipstick available, you cannot service it by your own. Bring to the dealership to check or change the fluid.

There is only one way to go about this. You MUST attach a scan tool capable of reading the fault codes stored in the TCCM ( Transfer Case Control module ) . After you have a code you will be more than half way there. The cheap code readers are not able to retrieve these codes, only the full function shop grade scanners can. So, you now know what you have do. The code reading is not a DIY job even though the fix might be.

What could be wrong when the vehicle doesnt shift properly
we changed the transmission filter and that did not help.

What do you mean by doesn’t shift properly? Is it feels like it’s delayed when shifting?

Check the condition of your main control assembly gasket (it may be damaged or one of its bolts is out of torque), main control separator plate, main control solenoid pump assembly bolt (maybe out of specification and pump gears (may be crake door damaged). If possible diagnose your vehicle with a scan tool to determine if there is a stored trouble code in your vehicle and to verify if all you electrical controls and sensors are operating well.

Why does my vehicle hesitate when i start to move and then when it gets to going good it shifts fine
      11/22/2010 MOONSTER_TOOLZ
A possible restriction in your air intake could be the reason. Check the condition of your air filter if blocked or contaminated; clean or replace it if necessary. Other than this, I suspect throttle position sensor or EGR is at fault. Have these verified by a scan tool to determine the exact fault. Aside from hesitation, is there any noticed not normal in the engine recently? Good details will help us in narrowing down the possibilities.

High idle when started. check engine light comes on when idling in park goes off when driving
    • vince^_^
      11/21/2010 vince^_^
Since your check engine light is ON when idling I suggest that you diagnose your vehicle with a scan tool to verify what the stored trouble code in your vehicle is. The extracted trouble code will help you find the fault of your vehicle’s problem and determine if all your electrical controls and sensors are working well. You can visit this link to have an idea how to diagnose your vehicle with a scan tool

The instrument panel cluster needs to be replaced. call a GM dealer and ask if they will "goodwill" it as these are failing at an alarming rate. I hear they are fixing them for cheap money, like under $200. There is no official recall about it so they are not obligated to do anything, so be nice.

How do i grease the speedometer cable without removing it ?
    cable is rattling inside housing
    • HouseCallAuto
      11/21/2010 HouseCallAuto
I kind of remember that the speedometer cable is only able to be slid out of the outer casing from one end only, and I think that end is the cluster / speedo end. Remove the cluster, disconnect the speedo cable, pull the inner cable up and out, lubricate it and slide it back in. You can try to do it from the other end but I don't think it will slide out, not 100% sure. Its been a while since I had to mess with a speedo cable.

The entire shifter assembly has to be replaced. That is the cause. This is a well known problem with this vehicle at GM dealers. The probability is greater than 90%.

is that an easy fix.? how much am looking at to repair?
    • pmccrite
      11/20/2010 pmccrite
You have to make sure that the button on the side of the shifter comes out or clicks, mine would go into park but the button would stay in so the key would not come out, so if I pushed it a little harder and then pulled back without holding the button and it would pop out and release the key.
