I have overcharged the air conditioning system, what do I do?
The compressor is new but was not cycling on when I went to recharge the system, thus the overcharge. The compressor is now cycling on and off but the overcharge remains.

If the AC works, then the pressures have to be fairly close. There are pressure switches for high pressure and low pressure that will disconnect the compressor if the pressures are too far off, either way.

Your mechanic would have to place a set of gauges on the lines to determine the pressures, and if he did this, then why didn't he go ahead and correct the problem?

Take it somewhere else and get a second opinion on it, if you are still worried.

      good luck to you!

Please take it to a licensed facility for evacuation and recharging. You could do damage to your system if run that way and damage to the atmosphere if you release the gas manually.

Thanks jejohnlo for your comment. I have been working on the system myself so access to gauges, etc. is not applicable. I am a shade tree mechanic who knows just enough to get in trouble, which is where you find me today. I am not out to do damage to anyone or the atmosphere, I just need to know how to bleed off the high pressure in the system. I am using the pressure gauge on a recharging kit I bought at the parts store. Money is an issue. Thanks for your thoughts.

You said it was new and wouldn't take a charge, then why do you think it is overcharged?

How did you get freon in? What did you do to get it to run?

How much did you put in??? If you used the small cans how many of them?

You can get the codes from the dash without a reader. You will have to look it up as I do not remember the exact buttons to use. Or you can have someone with a reader do it.

After you get the codes you can look them up on the internet.

Write them down and then clear them so you can see which one or ones come back.

A loose gas cap can give you a code so make sure it's tight.

There is a chance the head gasket is leaking even if the engine is running well. The Northstar is not designed like old school engines. There is an exhaust gas tester also known as a block tester that you can use, it is less than $50 but can be hard to find. Some radiator shops can do the test inexpensively.

Look at cadillacforums on the net for more detailed info.

Yes they do :) I'd go with Jet Chips or Super Chips. Buy the one with the PDA not just the add on.

Actually EDGE products also has good programmers.

Check your fuel system, dirts creates poor combustion - means some of the mixture were not burned during combustion.

Dirt inside fuel tank - clean it w/ fuel cleaner

Clogged fuel lines - clean the lines

Clogged fuel filter - replace filter

Clogged fuel injectors - clean fuel injectors

Dirty air filter - replace air filter

      Visit for parts

check to see if your coolant level is full(do it when the eng. is cold not hot you can burn yourself.) if it is then make sure your cooling fan is coming on when eng. is at operating temp. if that is good then you might have a bad thermostat....then there is a lot of other things to check but your getting into some more complicted stuff....

It starts but runs badly, it knocks, rattles & vibrates while in drive. and the tail pipes smoke while driving.
150000mi. coolant compressor kit, compressor @ coolant tank were replaced. roads were flooded & water got into the engine block. coolant was comming out of the exaust pipes.

It is usually mounted in your cylinder block, just follow your radiator hose (upper) from your radiator and at the end (or along) of it is where your thermostat is.

    Installing a new starter
One mechanic undid everything- then went to jail, next mechanic did not connect things up right, now I need to know just which wires to connect up to where they are supposed to go. I have a Haynes manual but it does not have any wiring diagrams. Help?

The starter has two wires that connect to it. On the large threaded stud the double wire red wire / black wire on one eyelet attaches to that stud (13mm nut). The other wire (purple) attaches to the small threaded stud - the retaining nut I believe is either 10mm or 8mm
