When the starter does not function and you suspect a bad starter, get access to the starter and see if the small wire going to the solenoid gets battery voltage when the key is turned to the crank position. There are only 2 wires at the starter, a small one and a fat one.

You must plug in a code reader and see what fault codes are stored, especially since this may be caused by a security system fault. This would leave a code stored. This is how this is diagnosed, you start by reading codes. You can read codes on Cadillac without a diagnostic tool by using the push buttons on the information center.
DTC display; 1998-2004 Seville, 2000-2005 Deville and other models with 3 buttons on the RH side of DIC

Use the 3 switches located to the right (LH drive cars) of the Driver Information Center (DIC) to activate and respond to the OBD prompts on the DIC.

      ON/OFF = YES
      INFO RESET = NO
INFO DOWN or INFO UP = manual toggle

Ignition ON, acknowledge any warning messages; press ON/OFF and INFO UP together for 2 to 3 seconds. Everything in front of you lights up for 4 or 5 seconds, then you will see:

      Display shows "ALL?"

Answering YES will display "ALL CODES?"
Answering YES will run automatic test sequence and display codes, if any. Systems and codes will scroll faster than I am able to read them and write them; not to worry.
"ALL CLEAR CODES?" will display at the end of the automatic test. If you are satisfied you have the information you need, answer YES to clear/erase all error codes.

Answering "ALL?" with INFO DOWN will toggle systems test manually in order.
Answering "ALL?" with INFO UP will toggle system test manually in reverse order.

Press INFO RESET to reset DIC to "ALL?" to start again.

      Ignition OFF to exit.

      SYSTEMS: (as of 1998)

      ABS (Antilock Brake System)
      AMP (Amplifier)
      DDM (Door Driver Module)
      DIM (Dash Integration Module)
      IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)
      IPM (Instrument Panel Module)
      IRC (Integrated Radio Module)
      PCM (Powertrain Control Module)
      RFA (Remote Function Actuation)
      RIM (Rear Integration Module)
SDM (Sensing and Diagnostic Module) Includes airbag crash data. Under RF seat
      VTD (Vehicle Theft Deterrent)
      MSM (Memory Seat Module)
      TTM (Tilt/Telescoping Module)
      RSS (Road Sensing Suspension)

"History" means that the fault is no longer detected. It will stay in history for 50 ignition cycles then be deleted unless it becomes "Current" again or is cleared manually.

How to fix cooling fan running indefinitely after engine shut off
Wife left engine and AC running at idle for extended period. Now cooling fan runs indefinitely. Tried removing fuses. Still runs with fuse 1 (41) removed, does not run with fuse 2 (45) removed. Runs with either or both relays removed. Tried battery disconnect ...

    • John's Auto Repair
Are you certain that you removed the right relay for the fan? Because with the relay disconnected
there is no way that the fan should run. The signal for fan comes from the computer, to the relay,
and the relay engages the fan.

SUV will not start some times after 4-14 days it will start like nothing is wrong.
When trying to start it sounds like ignition coil not on. Checked it and its good. No service engine light coming on. Fuel pump checked to be good. happens about every 2 months each time seems to take longer before starting.

Can you get a scan? It is free at any auto parts store like Auto.Zone Advance Auto.If the P.C.M. has set a code it will make it easier to see what the problem is.

Sometimes my car will stall and won't restart until I tighten the battery terninals.
This has happened 3 times in the last 2 months. Some times the car will restart normally after it stalls.AAA said the battery needed to be replaced. The dealer who sold me the battery said it was okay. He said my car was notoriious for lose terminals.

The loose terminals can be corrected - with or without a new battery. First step - thoroughly clean the battery terminals - especially the threads in the battery case. One tool to use for this purpose would be a stiff bristle wire brush.
Next, apply just a slight amount (one or two drops) of semi-permanent thread locker to the battery terminal bolts - just enough to prevent vibration from loosening the terminals under normal driving conditions.

What would cause oil to become black and like jello, after 2000 miles.

Sludge is a thickening of the engine oil until it reaches a jelly-like consistency. When the crankcase of your engine starts to accumulate sludge, the thickened oil finds its way into the passages that carry pressurized oil to the engine's bearings and other lubricant-needy parts. Since many of these passages are about the size of a small soda straw and sludgy oil has the consistency of an icy milkshake, the oil flow can become restricted. If that happens, components such as valve lifters soon start wearing rapidly and operating erratically.
There are several ways for sludge to form in your engine. Water gets into the crankcase through condensation and blowby from the combustion chambers. Water mixed with oil takes on the consistency of thick, pus-colored foam. You'll know it if you see it.

Fortunately, small quantities of water evaporate from the crankcase as the engine warms up and the oil temperature gets above 212 degrees, which it does after a few minutes on a freeway. However, if you only drive short trips, your crankcase never gets hot enough to evaporate any accumulated water, and in such an engine, sludge formation seems certain in its future.

Sludge can also form if the oil gets too hot. At temperatures above 250 degrees, nonsynthetic oil starts to oxidize. Such oxidation thickens the oil and produces acidic byproducts. The process accelerates when the oil temperature hits 300 degrees, and the result is something more akin to tar than oil

I thank you for your time. I did have the oil changed and will again at 1000 miles. I do get a light on at idle oil light just flickers a bit. before the oil change the light and stop engine was coming. It seems to be better now that I put some miles on not much about 120 miles since oil change.

First thing to check is any fuse related to blower motor. Then if possible, run a wire directly to the blower and see if it starts runnin to verify whether the blowers working. If those things pass, look under dash under glovebox for the blower motor resistor which will be bolted to housing. If that passes, its probably in the fan switch on dash

Why does my car lose all engine power when pushing the gas pedal after driving for 45 min or more?
I've had 4 injectors replaces on my car and it didn't act like this. I was told that it could be a coolant sensor because it does it after I've been driving for a while. I was told the cam shaft sensor was replaced 3 yrs. ago but was told today, my car doesn't have ...

First step - have the stored fault codes or check engine light scanned - for free - at any local auto parts store; Advance Auto, Auto Zone, NAPA. Then, post a reply as 'add answer' with the specific code for more assistance. There may be a fault code stored in the OBD memory which may not be displayed as a check engine light.
For the pre-1995 models the OBD I system was used. The code reader is different for this older system - however most part stores will still have the capability to read and retrieve any stored codes.

Possible Causes of Engine Hesitation or Stumble:

Dirty fuel injectors (cleaning the injectors often fixes this)
      Dirty air filter (change filter)
Dirty / clogged fuel filter (change filter)
Bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
      Bad TPS (throttle position) sensor
Bad or dirty MAF (mass airflow) sensor
Low fuel pressure (leaky fuel pressure regulator or weak fuel pump)
Vacuum leaks (intake manifold, vacuum hoses, throttle body, EGR valve)
Bad gasoline (fuel contaminated with water or too much alcohol)

Sometimes, what feels like a hesitation is actually ignition misfire rather than lean misfire. The causes of ignition misfire may include:

      Dirty or worn spark plugs
      Bad plug wires
      Weak ignition coil
      Wet plug wires

OBD1 Codes Retrieval (Pre-1995 Cars and Trucks)
      GM 1983-95 vehicles OBD1 codes self-retrieval

As the name implies, you can get the codes for GM cars or trucks yourself if the model of your vehicle is made before 1995, this means as soon as you see “check engine light” in your dash, you can get the code in minutes if you want.

The connector where you get the GM OBD1 code is usually located under the instrument panel, or under the hood - near the fuse box / power distribution panel.

When you find the adapter connector, use a jumper wire (see red wire above) and connect terminals A and B. Next turn your key on but don't start. Watch your check engine flash the code/s.

EXAMPLE: CODE 12: one long flash and two short flashesCODE 13: one long flash and 3 short flashes.

Note: code 12 is usually the first code you get and just ignore it.Watch the code after code 12, that's what you need.
