    I need to know what a "coil boot" is so I can determine if my estimated cost from the auto-shop is valid.
    I am a WIDOW and know nothing about cars. I just found this website and I tried to input info about the repair estimate given to me by the auto-shop but "coil boot" means nothing to me. My Cadillac has 114,000 miles on it and it's always been serviced regularly. ...

    I just bought a 2000 deville..the person i bought it from told me he was driving and the dash lights went heywire on it.
    the car has 170000 when i turn the key to start i get a black dash..car won't do anything. i have over 12 v everywhere. i have checked all the fuses and they all seem to be fine. there is no engine light on. it just has me stumped. i'm not a full fledged mechanic. ...

      check the ground. when i check them i leave it plugged in i poke t pins into the back of the connector. with digital things just a weak connection will make them not work. but with out the load of the component a voltmeter will still read 12 and your ground will ohm out fine but pluged in put your voltmeter on ground wire and ground with the other lead it should be very close to zero if there is more than a half a volt its a bad ground. more than likely its the gauge cluster but i like to prove it before i order parts. if you want to understand better why it needs to be plugged in to test power and ground google differance between potential and available voltage. also with computer controlled components test lights are horable for them they can fry circuits in controllers.

    My engine can't rev over 3000 rpm
    I replaced the air filter,MAP sensor,fuel pump and filter,throttle position sensor. It has black and blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe.

      What fault codes are stored? Checking for codes cannot be skipped. Replace the rubber seal between the throttle body and the intake manifold as they are almost all defective after 5 years.

    Coolant leaking due to warn gaskets. Please estimate the cost of repair

    Idle goes up to 1500rpm after car warms up
    my car idles at about 650rpm when its running normal. But after i drive it for 20-30min the idle will raise to 1200-1500rpm. the MIL comes on and ses TPS but i replaced the TPS and i shook the wires while watching it on scanner and it doesnt change so i know wiring ...

      You did not make clear what fault codes are still returning. Tell me the code numbers. if there are no codes stored tell me that. If you still are getting a TPS code then this is your cause for the idle speed problem. That means circuit checking the TPS wires back to the PCM. The idle speed control has been known to go bad with no codes showing.

      yes the TPS code keeps returning, even after a wiggle test, and a new TPS.

      P0121 means Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit Range/Performance Problem. P0121 occurs when the PCM has detected a throttle angle that is significantly higher or lower for the specified engine RPM (revolution per minute).

      Possible Causes:

      Open or short in the TPS wiring or circuit
      Loose or contaminated TPS connector
      Defective PCM

      Possible Solutions:

      Repair or replace TPS wiring or circuit
      Tighten or replace TPS connector
      Replace PCM

      Plug in a code reader and read what fault codes are there. Write them down. Update the post with code numbers. Then erase all the codes and see if erasing the codes restores driveability temporarily.

    Won't crank, temperature gauge and fuel gauge won't work. The engine computer that came with the engine is what I have worked on.

      I would check the battery terminals for corrosion being present under the vinyl covers. In order to see this you have to remove the 5/16 battery tyerminal bolt completely from the terminal and slip off the vinyl covers and then you can see the cable and the crimp and the condition of the lug. Wire brush etc..and also clean the lead on the battery.

      The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve simply reroutes some of the exhaust gases into the intake (engine inlet) to help the engine burn more completely and reduce emissions.

      Why do you ask - is there an issue in regard to the EGR valve?

      Try cleaning the EGR valve as a first step - less expense than replacing it. Use a quality carburetor / fuel system aerosol spray to thoroughly clean the EGR valve - inside and out.

    Why would your oil pressure warning lights come on
    Oil is up and not needed, checked dip stick....stop engine warning...did not over heat

      Hard to advise because if there is no oil pressure then you do not have a lot of time to spend listening to it for a diagnosis. That being said this needs a pro to look at it so there is the least amount of time that the engine will run during diagnosis. An engine that has zero oil pressure will become severely damaged in just a few minutes of running so the strategy that will be used by a pro would be to hook up a manual gauge to read actual oil pressure the moment it is running and if there is oil pressure then the engine can be allowed to continue to run to determine the cause of the stop engine warning. Might be a bad sending unit but right now you do not know that.

      Sounds like a weak battery, or short in the electrical system - but before replacing the battery, remove it and take to the nearest auto parts store to have the battery fully recharged and tested for free.

      There may be other issues; alternator, serpentine drive belt worn or belt tensioner worn - in addition to the parasitic current draw. Check to make sure all switches / lights / interior door lights / courtesy lights are off.

      To test for the parasitic electrical draw - remove the various fuses - one at a time - and with a volt / ohm meter connected across the battery terminals - observe whether the respective circuit has any voltage drop with the fuse removed and replaced. If the fuse removal and replacement affects the voltage / current drop - then look at the components in that particular circuit.

      Once the battery is fully charged and reinstalled - take the vehicle to the nearest auto parts store for a complete charging system test - for free - to test the condition of the; alternator, battery, belt, wiring, starter, etc. Post a reply with the results for further assistance.

    Car starts and drives great in the morning, by the end of the day wont start at all, instrument panel lights up

    Fluctuating idle and rpm
    my car's idle goes from 6oorpm to 900 rpm when i put it in gear, and sometimes it will hold 40mph and slowly climb with my foot of the gas pedal. does this sound like a vacuum leak? and sometimes it idles and runs fine..its very strange symptoms..any suggestions?

      Several possibilities; vacuum hose / tube leaking, faulty IAC (idle air control) valve. As a first step - inspect / trace all the vacuum hoses - replace any which are damaged or cracked.

      The parts are readily available from these many on-line sources, www.partsgeek.com, www.rockauto.com, www.discountautoparts.com, www.autopartswarehouse.com, www.jcwhitney.com - to list only a few possibilities.
      In fact, they (RockAuto) list the IAC from around $167.00 for your vehicle.
