Have to attach a code reader and read fault codes and attempt to erase the codes. It may be in limp mode because of a fault. Sometimes erasing the codes even without doing a repair gets it shifting again. What you are saying is that it is stuck in first gear and is not shifting.

What are the RPM's during idle, do they fluctuate? Is there a check engine light? If so what are the codes? It could be transmission slippage but I wouldn't count on it yet.

I would consider tring to give a fat tip to the service manager discreetly and ask him if this falls under a category known internally amonst the shop officials as "good will" ? Get him alone and be discreet about it. $200 if it were me. If he cannot do it he won't take the money.

It sounds as though you may have a misfire on one of the cylinders. The most co mon cause of this on your car is a bad ignition wire or a bad ignition coil.

Transmission will engage when car is cold but not warmed up, any ideas?
My transmission will engage after my car is started (cold) and I drive to work (about 40minutes) once I arrive it will not engage in reverse. Sometimes I can place it in reverse and give a little gas and it will slowly engage and then "catch" (not a hard catch but a ...

Thanks for the reply. You wouldn't happen to know why this is happening exactly do you? Since I have no issues in other gears.

Why does my car make grinding sound when I step on the gas?
I'm not sure of mileage, I have it serviced every 2000 miles. I just had brakes checked and they do need to be replaced so my son is doing that now. I noticed the car was making a grinding sound yesterday, but it was after being stopped and when I pushed on the gas ...

being that it is icy when you hear it look for your traction control light or it could just be the snow and ice crunching under the tires. it really sounds like traction control working though.

Car ran fine Wednesday night but would not go into gear next morning. The gear shift (automatic trans) is on the column
Shifter moves freely through all gears but transmission does not engage. Fluid level is good but shifter may have more "play" than usual. New filter and fluid change last year. Any suggestions?

Since you are saying that the shifter moves with less resistance now (free play) I suspect that you have a broken or disconnected shift cable. This can be confirmed by having someone move the shifter through its range of motion while looking at the point that the shift cable attaches to the transmission shift lever which can be seen with the hood opened and locating the shift lever at the tranny. If the cable is broken or it disconnected the shift lever will not move.

Thank you for your help, I'll check first thing tomorrow. Is shift lever on tranny at the front left (driver) side or right (passenger) side?
