Could be a clogged and restricted catalytic converter. lack of fuel pressure, faulty MAF sensor. you didnt mention if the check engine light was on or flashing. whether or not the transmission was actually shifting. theres a lot of veritables, start with the basics and go from there. process of elimination. hopes this hopes. good luck.

Why does my car shutter and shake when I engage the accelerator?
My car has over 240,000 miles. The shuttering and shaking does not occur when I disengage the accelerator. Going down hill, without pressing the accelerator, it runs smoothly. The tires have been inspected...the fuel line inspected...no problems there...there is no ...

Shutter and shake as you accelerate, seems like a ignition misfire under load condition, the ignition coil can be faulty or the sparkplug wire,

Why would transmission slips slightly on takeoff{sometimes)?

If the fluid level is OK; still slips / does not engage - then no easy fix. Most likely the transmission bands / friction surfaces are worn and need replacement. This means either a transmission overhaul / rebuild or replacement. The black / discolored fluid you mentioned is not a positive sign.

Check the various on-line vendors; www.autopartswarehouse.com, www.RockAuto.com, www.partsgeek.com, to list only a few. For example, they (RockAuto) list the transmission (rebuilt) from around $1130.00 (minus core exchange and minus labor), and the transmission rebuild kit from around $130.00 for your vehicle.

What would make my transmission slip when taking off?
Did a recommended filter and fluid change. Now the trans shifts good and no codes but sometimes when taking off, it will act like its slipping a little, then you let off and it works fine, I have checked the fluid level and its fine, the old tranny fluid was very ...

First, check the battery and starter cables for their tightness or free of corrosion and physical damaged.

See this Starting system simplified diagram. Have a help from an assistant to crank the engine, use a 12 volt light tester or a digital voltmeter, apply it to the starter control circuit.
If there is light or 12 volts and the starter isn't cranking, then the starter is the culprit. Have the starter to bench test for free at the local auto parts stores.
If there isn't no light or no volts, then the ignition switch is the culprit.
Check the starter relay and position the Automatic transmission shifter in neutral.

      http://www.samarins.com/glossary/starter.html

Note: a 3/4 charge battery is 12.50 volts
A discharge battery is 11.75 volts.
A battery under a cranking load and it is reading less than 7 volts,it will be a recycled battery.
