Engine turns over fine but wont start, stutters bad & sometimes backfires. should'nt it give a check engine light?danb.jn832 - 1991 Buick LeSabre - Engine - 2/1/2013has a new batt. & Alt. no present codes but did have a history code 34 which points to MAF sensor. I took it off and car ran great so engine is fine. Replaced MAF sensor, car didnt want to start at first, but once i got it started it ran great at idle & road test. ...-
2/1/2013 HouseCallAutoIn '91, the computer tracking for faulty sensors was not accurate at all. Most likely cause of your no start would be a bad ignition control module (easy to replace but expensive part) or a bad crankshaft position sensor (inexpensive part but requires removing the harmonic balancer to replace).
2/1/2013 danb.jn832ignition module is good all 3 coils are firing. will engine run good with bad Crank PS? with MAF off and in open/loop engine run good for about 5 - 10 min. my experiance with CKP sensors is car wont start at all, just turn over. -
2/1/2013 HouseCallAutoThe IAC will not cause any running issue besides stalling out or an incorrect idle speed. The TPS could go bad and usually sets a code 21 or 22. You can manually check the TPS with a digital ohmeter but if it is in question, just replace the sensor as it is not big money and is easy to replace. You said you replaced the MAF sensor so that rules that out *unless* there is a code 34 resetting even after replacing the MAF. Your symptoms do sound like MAF sensor but you said it is new so I went past that. You did say if I understand correctly that at this time "engine turns over fine but wont start". So explain what you mean in further detail before I comment further.
2/2/2013 danb.jn832thank you for answering. Right now I can get it to start barely but it sputters real bad and if I don't play with the gas peddle it will die out on its own. there is no codes, it backfired once bad messing up the air filter, never happened before. i'm thinking fuel problem sence no codes?
2/2/2013 HouseCallAutoNo, you cannot make that jump for a '91 as the computer is just not powerful to detect and set codes like OBDII systems are starting in '96. This being a 3.8 '91 GM car, the classic things that cause hard starting and backfires are coilpack and crank sensor. The coil will not set a code and the crank sensor does not always set a code when they are intermittent.

The temperature in my 95 buick century keeps going up to the overheat then back down to normal temperature. Any ideas?fran07 - 1995 Buick Century - Engine - 1/31/2013I have already replaced the thermostat, temperature sensor and the water pump.-
1/31/2013 CVOAir pockets trapped in the cooling system can cause the engine to overheat. Some cooling systems have air bleed valves built into the system to aid in the removal of air pockets.
Advice: For many cooling systems, the method of removing air pockets is to start the engine and allow it to run with the radiator cap off or loose until all the air escapes from the neck of the radiator. For some systems this method is not sufficient, and the manufacturer has installed air bleed valves usually near or on the thermostat housing.

I have a blown engine and want to pull the engine and trans together if thats the best way.retired_farmer - 1996 Buick Regal - Engine - 1/28/2013Do I have to pull the cv joints loose at the wheels, and will they slide off the trans like the old drive shafts use too, or if not tell me the best way to go about this.Thank You Danny.-
1/28/2013 1beastlydudebest way to find out is before you try taking out the motor, get under and slide the boot out of the way of the cv joint, if it looks like three balls around a shaft then yes, they will slide out.
if it looks like a normal uv joint then no you will have to unbolt it first.

1/28/2013 1beastlydudeyou may have a fuel problem, bring your car to an auto parts place like autozone, have a code scan run
make sure there arent any known problems,if not then have the fuel filter changed . its a cheap step in figureing out what could be wrong.
does the car do this any other times when cold , heavy acceleration?

1/17/2013 CVOStarter ?
Try this,
First, check the battery and starter cables for their tightness or free of corrosion and physical damaged.
See this Starting system simplified diagram. Have a help from an assistant to crank the engine, use a 12 volt light tester or a digital voltmeter, apply it to the starter control circuit.
If there is light or 12 volts and the starter isn't cranking, then the starter is the culprit. Have the starter to bench test for free at the local auto parts stores.
If there isn't no light or no volts, then the ignition switch is the culprit.
Check the starter relay and position the Automatic transmission shifter in neutral.

Note: a 3/4 charge battery is 12.50 volts
A discharge battery is 11.75 volts.
A battery under a cranking load and it is reading less than 7 volts,it will be a recycled ( junk ) battery.

1/16/2013 CVOInsufficient coolant , trapped air in the cooling system might not have enough coolant to full fill the heater core. Check the radiator coolant level and top it off as needed.
If these tips had been followed and the heater is still blowing cool air, then some adjustment might be needed for the temperature control cable.
