I'm confused. What do you mean when you say " idle is too high only to start "?
If the idle is high all the time, you may have anything from a vacuum hose leak
to a bad Idle Air Control Motor

The stalling problem was likely either a bad crank sensor or a bad ignition module.

No you just need to take it to another mechanic and tell the same story. Your story is the truth so its easy to understand. The engine in your Buick is not an uncommon engine and most shops will be fine with taking over. I don't know how the stalling out got related to a coolant leak and intake manifold removal but whatever. Tell the same story to another shop. Stop in there in person and tell the story before bringing them the car. Get a feeling of assurance that they will handle it.

I will do that. I will stop in a triple A approved shop in person , tell them the story then get Buick towed there if they accept .

      I appreciate your advice.

      Thank you.

The only thing that can cause the fuel pump fuse to blow is a direct short circuit internally of the fuel pump motor itself OR if the Gray battery voltage supply wire is touching a ground in between the fuse panel and the fuel pump connector. In most cases the fuel pump is the cause, but this still requires confirming.

Why does vehicle flood and stall sporadically?
This vehicle will flood (no pedal depression) while starting and will stall when [pulling into parking lots or other stops. This only happens sporadically but I would guess it to be a fuel control valve or something that mal-functions occasionally. I do not know ...

How long since a tune-up? It sounds like your having idle issues. I'd check anything that has to do with idle air and air intake. When you go to start, you can hold the throttle open just a little, see if makes any difference?

With intermittent issues, you need to test when problem is ongoing. Can you check for applicable trouble codes. Some of the national brand auto stores will check codes for free. If there are any?

Hope you got it fixed by now. Did it run after you installed the new fuel pump? Did you check voltage and ground at the pump when the problem was ongoing?

You may have a bad ignition switch. Not that uncommon on these vehicles.

      For all of the issues?

It can cause these issues. However, what you can try is playing with the key (back and forth) to
see if it causes any difference. Also if it has tilt wheel, you can try the key thing while moving
the tilt wheel up and down.

Have you had a chance to do what I suggested? Moving the key slightly back and forth. Not
      that is a definative diagnosis.

I agree with John's and would say that the cause is a bad ignition switch with 100% confidence. Replace it. All these issues are well known symptoms of an intermittent ignition switch on this vehicle.

Car is leaking oil bad. Looks like it is coming from the front of the motor close to the radiator.
Too cold and dark to see. What could the problem be!

There is no substitute for doing a visual look. There is no motor oil that runs near the radiator. So maybe you meant to say transmission oil? Could be a transmission cooling line?

The most liikely cause for these two codes showing is that the timing chain needs to be replaced. Not uncommon but sad that people have to deal with this kind of expense on stuff that should not go bad. Yes this is expensive so get ready for $2000 +

the timing has been replaced. this car was sold to me like this with the intent the ppl who sold it to me would fix it. all they did was replace a sensor and acuator. now im stuck because there is probably nothing i can do to get them to fix it. but i dont feel its right when they knowingly sold it to me like this. i cant figure out what keeps throwing the light on.

How do you know the timig chains and tensioners were replaced, because they said so? There is like no other cause almost for these two codes except for maybe exteremely dirty and overdue oil and filter change.

This auto is actually a 1979 but a simple and straight forward question. The car is a one owner car and has sat garaged
We needed to add transmission fluid and was wondering how many quarts were required for a 1979. We have added one quart and didn't want to over do it.

with it running add half a quart at a time a little overfull wont hurt anything. total they usually hold about 6 quarts.

What does the fuel pump relay do?
Everyone says I need a new fuel pump, but one day it was running fine then next time I went to start it it wouldn't start?

    • HouseCallAuto

There is insufficient information here to decide if the cause is even fuel related. Could be a crank sensor, a mass air flow sensor, an ignition control module, a fuel pump relay or a fuel pump. the least likely of any of these things is a fuel pump relay. The relay is ruled out easy enough, just replace it yourself in 2 minutes with no tools. Its inside the underhood fuse / relay panel. Plug in a code reader and see if any fault codes are stored. You can obtain a code reader from amazon.com for $20. Reading codes takes 2 minutes with no experience needed.

That's pretty much the way they fail. The fuel pump relay is activated by the engine computer. It
sends 12 volts to the fuel pump. Relays can fail but if you checked for voltage at the fuel pump
connector near the fuel tank for several seconds when turning key to run. Than the relay would be working.

Rigging an igintion switch to bypass VATS ignition switch
Hello. I only have one VATS ignition key for my car and I don't want to pay what a dealer wants for a copy of this key. It's ridiculous. Would a rigged, push-button switch wired directly from the starter work or would the VATS technology in this car still prevent it ...

I can start typing here for 15 minutes and explain how, but I don't have to. Just Google "Pass Key bypass" and by the way the anti-theft in your 99 Buick is referred to as Pass-Key II and the letters VATS refer to Ford vehicles for the Vehicle Anti Theft System.

the bypass can be done for next to no money on your own.

By the way the starter bypass will not work.
