Reverse does not work at all.
How difficult and expensive would it be to fix the reverse in this bmw? Everything but the reverse works.

    Clutch pedal stays down
while driving the car the clutch pedal was pushed in to change gears and stayed about 3/4 of the way down. My daughter had to reach down and pull it back up. Unfortunately can't get it to shift gears now either. There were no signs of any problem before this occurred.

Simple and inexpensive repair - replace both the clutch master and clutch slave hydraulic cylinders at the same time. The clutch master and slave cylinders are mounted underneath the vehicle on the lower firewall on the outside - just next to the transmission and behind the clutch pedal arm.

The parts are readily available from these many on-line sources, www.partsgeek.com, www.rockauto.com, www.discountautoparts.com, www.autopartswarehouse.com, www.jcwhitney.com - to list only a few possibilities.
In fact, they (RockAuto) list the clutch master cylinder from around $66.00, and the clutch slave cylinder from around $25.70 for your vehicle.

Reference these websites for the clutch master and slave cylinder replacement steps; www.AutoMD.com and the 'How-To-Guides' feature, www.autozone.com - to list only two sources.

Should I apply parking break at all times after putting car into park.does this affect transmission
I've been told that by preventing the truck/car from rolling it saves wear and tear on the transmission. Is this true?

Yes, true statement. The parking brake uses the rear brakes application to hold the weight of the vehicle. Simply relying on the transmission does not cause harm - but in the event the transmission 'Park' locking mechanism does not work or fails unexpectedly, then the vehicle may tend to roll.

Generally best to use both devices; the transmission Park position and the parking brake engagement when parking the vehicle and leaving it unattended.

These range sensors were prone to failure due to corrosion. Location is on the bottom of the transmission near the subframe - and due to location is easily replaced.

The parts are readily available from these many on-line sources, www.partsgeek.com, www.rockauto.com, www.discountautoparts.com, www.autopartswarehouse.com, www.jcwhitney.com - to list only a few possibilities.
In fact, they (RockAuto) list the transmission range sensor from around $61.00 for your vehicle - depending upon the build date.
If you need directions / instructions for the replacement, use these websites; www.autozone.com, or www.AutoMD.com and the 'How-To-Guides' feature.

My car loses power and does not start back up. This has happened numerous times
I was driving and the car turned off, and there was no power at all. This is the third time this has happened. It's been to the shop and is always good for about 3 to 4 months then it happens again

1st make sure to use OEM parts. after market parts are cheap and dont last.. 2nd- take the drive shaft out and check the U Joints. make sure they are free and not binding from one side to another , also check the joint for both radial and lateral play. stiff U joints on the drive shaft are the main reason of damaging the center carrier bearings. too bad BMW dont sell the U Joints by them selves , you have to buy the whole drive shaft. When installing the drive shaft make sure the center clamp ring is loose, tighten both ends of the drive shaft First , pre-load the center carrier bearing and tighten it in place then tighten the center clamp ring last. hopefully this helps

Is this a bad solenoid , computer problem or major rebuild problem?
The car has 145k on it. The transmission never had any problems. This occurred in a single trip. It started to slip approximately 5 miles from the house. We made it home, turned the car off, restarted it, checked the fluid level. Full, red in color, no burned odors. ...

I have never seen anything but a transmission rebuild solve this symptom. There is no solenoid that can fail and allow reverse function and block forward gears.
