    Am I getting ripped off?
I have rebuild transmission in 1997 Acura CL 3.0 still under warranty. 8 month after rebuild, I have codes P0700, and 2 codes for Clutch Pressure Control (Linear) Solenoid Valve A and B, car is stalling at red light, can't put in reverse gears (whines). 1 ...

Sounds like they lack experience with a diagnosis more than ripoff, but they also are charging you for their incompetence. You have to give them reasonable latitude but it sounds like a dart game here. I would like to know all the code numbers and not the titlesor sentences that the scanner says.

Most likely you have a bad idle speed control on the throttle body.

Can Acura cover the cost for transmission?
I own a 2005 Acura TL and the transmission is slipping when I'm driving about 45+mph. An Acura dealer wants to charge me $4500 to replace the tranny. Given the past history of faulty TL transmissions, is there anything I can do to get Acura to cover some of the cost?

Transmissions replaced on 3/2005 and later Acura TLs include a redesigned 3rd gear clutch pack reported to fix the known problem with the transmission. The transmission skips gears and eventually gives out. This seems to be a known problem for Acura/Honda of this year.

In the future, avoid the fluid flush service - this is the worst possible thing that can done to one of these transmissions. Even the Honda service bulletins will tell you that the drain and fill method is the only accepted method of changing out transmission fluid.

I doubt it unless there was some recall relating to a transmission problem but you may be able to get it done at an independent trans shop for $3000

What would be a reasonable charge for a shop to replace a hydraulic hose and a clutch slave cylinder?
The car suddenly would not shift into gear and the clutch stayed depressed to the floor. A leak in a hydraulic hose was detected. The shop recommends replacing the clutch slave cylinder at the same time. Estimate for the hose: $200 Estimate for the slave cylinder: ...

The car has an automatic transmission. about 5 seconds after starting the car the s3 light blinks.
also when 1st starting the car it hesitates. you have to crank it for 5 seconds or so for it to start. after that it starts right up. i don't know if this has anything to do with the s3 light blinking.

when i replace my cv axles do i leak any trans fluid and what fluid is recommended if needed change: Honda or Vavoline
its a 6 speed gs model type 2 and its my first time changing cv axles and im not sure if i need to add fluid, just need to know what kind

    • Jimm
      6/17/2013 Jimm
There may be a slight amount leaked out - or needing to be replaced with the new CV axles replacement. The recommended manual transmission fluid type is; standard engine oil 10w30 or 10w40 SG (regardless of the brand name).

The recommend transmission fluid type is engine oil; 10w30 or 10w40 SG service grade - this is specifiied in the Acura Lengend service manuals - for the manual trnsmissions. Hopefully, this direction is clear enough.

seems clear to me. The stuff below is not correct as this is heavy weight gear oil.

this car does not have axles in the trans. like most Honda and Acuras. they are in the differential which is separate from the trans and uses 80w90 gear oil.
    • Jimm
      6/18/2013 Jimm
Do not use the 80 - 90 weight gear oil - as below. Use the recommended oil of the 10w30 or 10w40 weight - as stated in the Acura shop manual - for the transaxle fluid.
For the Acura manual transmissions of the G2 (generation 2) era, the service manual specifies the 10W-30 or 10W-40 and rating SG motor oil.

Don't be confused - use GL5 hypoid oil (transmission oil) for your differential - but use the 10w30 or 10w40 for the manual transmission.

I misssed the boat on that one. THEBACKHOME is correct and so is ning_nong. The differential is a separate unit from the tranny and takes gear oil. This situation is NOT typical.

Is it imperative to change the transmission fluid at 120,000 miles? How much should it cost?
A mechanic told me it might hurt the car if I change the transmission fluid (it's at 128,000 miles) now, since I didn't do it at the recommended 120,000 mile mark. Any information on this or the above question is appreciated

Need more information - when was the last (most recent) transmission service performed? How many miles since the last fluid and filter change? If over say 36k miles or 3 years time - then time to change the fluid and filter anyway - the additional 8k miles will not matter much in this case.

The rule that I follow here is if the tranny oil is still mostly red in color as opposed to dark brown or even black, then it is Ok to get it changed. If it is very ugly dark or black, you may make slipping happen that isn't right now because of all the abrasive contaminant in the oil if you change it.

Thank you so much for your informative reply. If after changing the fluid the slipping happens, is there anything that can be done to correct it?
    • HouseCallAuto
      5/15/2013 HouseCallAuto
Yes, replace the tranny. The theory here is changing the tranny oil did not cause the damage to the tranny to make it slip (if it slips at all) but it simply exposes the amount of wear that there was already on the clutch packs within the unit. The damage was already there, you just speeded up the process by removing much of the contaminant that was kind of the "glue" that was allowing transmission function without noticing any slippage. A healthy transmission should not need any help with contaminated oil to prevent it from slipping. Its supposed to operate normally with nice clean uncontaminated red tranny oil of the proper specification.

One last question: What should be the appropriate fee for changing the transmission fluid and (if later on it proves to be needed) the tranny?

The chain lube centers like Jiffy Lube for in stance have the machine that changes out all the trans oil without removing the trans oil pan. The cost is about $175 or less, keep in mind that a 12 quart case (the service will use at least 10 quarts) of Honda trans oil costs about $8.00 a quart. A rebuilt tranny is gonna cost about $2500 about for the full job with at least a one year 12000 warranty, maybe two year 24000.

It could be the I.A.C.motor :When the ignition is switched on the I.A.C.motor positions it's pintle to allow so much air for idle.It could be a power problem to the motor or the motor itself could be dirty or bad.At 172000 miles it's not surprising, but I would check the battery first thing and be sure it is in top shape because low battery power could cause it not to function.Have a load-test done on the battery if it close to the expiry date or replace it.
