Is it imperative to change the transmission fluid at 120,000 miles? How much should it cost?
A mechanic told me it might hurt the car if I change the transmission fluid (it's at 128,000 miles) now, since I didn't do it at the recommended 120,000 mile mark. Any information on this or the above question is appreciated

Need more information - when was the last (most recent) transmission service performed? How many miles since the last fluid and filter change? If over say 36k miles or 3 years time - then time to change the fluid and filter anyway - the additional 8k miles will not matter much in this case.

The rule that I follow here is if the tranny oil is still mostly red in color as opposed to dark brown or even black, then it is Ok to get it changed. If it is very ugly dark or black, you may make slipping happen that isn't right now because of all the abrasive contaminant in the oil if you change it.

Thank you so much for your informative reply. If after changing the fluid the slipping happens, is there anything that can be done to correct it?

Yes, replace the tranny. The theory here is changing the tranny oil did not cause the damage to the tranny to make it slip (if it slips at all) but it simply exposes the amount of wear that there was already on the clutch packs within the unit. The damage was already there, you just speeded up the process by removing much of the contaminant that was kind of the "glue" that was allowing transmission function without noticing any slippage. A healthy transmission should not need any help with contaminated oil to prevent it from slipping. Its supposed to operate normally with nice clean uncontaminated red tranny oil of the proper specification.

One last question: What should be the appropriate fee for changing the transmission fluid and (if later on it proves to be needed) the tranny?

The chain lube centers like Jiffy Lube for in stance have the machine that changes out all the trans oil without removing the trans oil pan. The cost is about $175 or less, keep in mind that a 12 quart case (the service will use at least 10 quarts) of Honda trans oil costs about $8.00 a quart. A rebuilt tranny is gonna cost about $2500 about for the full job with at least a one year 12000 warranty, maybe two year 24000.

It could be the I.A.C.motor :When the ignition is switched on the I.A.C.motor positions it's pintle to allow so much air for idle.It could be a power problem to the motor or the motor itself could be dirty or bad.At 172000 miles it's not surprising, but I would check the battery first thing and be sure it is in top shape because low battery power could cause it not to function.Have a load-test done on the battery if it close to the expiry date or replace it.

      Hello
Sounds like you may have added to your problems by blowing a fuse. Check all of your fuses. Also I am not sure how you came about to clean the neutral safety switch? Joe Boulay

The answer is yes... Start with changing the fluid if it's an automatic. Replace the clutch if it's a stick.

Why trans will not shift when it's cold or has not been started up for 4-5 hrs?
02 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8T. Trans will delay shifting to second when car has not been ran for 4-5 hours or longer? But if you start the car and let it idle for about 3-4 minutes, it'll shift perfect. Same way all the time.

    Do I need a new transmission/Should I get a new car?
Recently my car shut off while driving and would not start back up. At first I thought it was the battery, but it turned out to be the timing belt. I had both the timing belt and the water pump replaced by a shop. When I went to pick up the car it didn't drive ...

It's your call / your decision. I'd base the decision on the overall condition of the vehicle and the actual cost of the rebuild / replacement transmission. Generally, a new or rebuilt transmission is cheaper than a new vehicle, but again it's your decision. By all means get a second opinion - especially from a local and trusted mechanic or repair shop and not the internet.

Why does my car make a whining noise?
