  A relay is thought of as an electric switch. The function of a relay is to take the mechanical action of a switch, such as a turn signal lever - and translate or relay the action to an electrical signal - such as when the turn signal is pushed to the 'left' side, the relay will trigger the left light bulbs and flasher to operate.
