What would make a rattling noise then cause the serpentine belt to break and car to run hot?

  Check the source of the initial rattling noise; maybe related to a faulty drive belt tensioner, faulty drive belt idler pulley, misaligned drive belt.
  Check the many different water pump assemblies at the on-line auto parts sources; such as - www.autopartswarehouse.com, www.partsgeek.com and www.rockauto.com for the replacement parts.

  I suspect a bad water pump bearing or idler pulley that seized.
