2006 BMW 525xi Base 6Cyl3.0L - Engine

I have been quoted $825 to replace a battery. They state the OME battery is no longer being made and that I must upgrade

To a green battery and codes must be reset. I do not see why they cannot simply replace with an interstate lead acid battery. Am I getting correct advice?

  The accepted answer is informative, but I as a mechanic my entire life find it weird and unnecessary to place a burden on car owners this way, this is insanity caused by these BMW engineers. Or what, the engineers simply defend it by saying if you can afford a BMW then you will just take this in stride? BMW, shame on you. $825 for a battery. You bunch of disrespectful boneheads.
