What would the problem be if my truck will not start unless it is jumped and the alternator has been tested and works
On a cold night I was low on gas and the truck wouldn't start. We replaced the fuel pump as we thought it was the problem and after that it wouldn't start unless we had it jump started. I am trying to know what to troubleshoot to fix this. Any help would be very nice.

The battery was replaced and the new one was worse (Charged for 4 hours) and the alternator was taken out and checked and works fine too.

My fried isn't a certified mechanic and says he believes it is the tumbler. If it was the tumbler would the tumbler work when jumped and not when off the jump?? THanks for your replies!

If you have to jump start the battery to start the truck, check the battery and cable connections. Battery cables must be clean and tight and the battery must be good.

The battery is brand new and the connections to the battery are tight and clean. Could this be the tumbler?

If the truck starts when you jump it, it has to be the battery or connections

So no matter what it wouldn't be the ignition or the tumbler? I just really need to know if that is out of our list of options because my friend swears it is that and if not I am out a $80 part. Many thanks!

If the ignition switch was bad, attaching a jumper battery will have no affect. Tests need to be performed to determine the cause. What is the battery voltage? Do you have power to the starter when the key is turned?

The volts was 11 and yes, the starter has power.

11 volts is too low. A fully charged battery should be 12.6

Now with a brand new battery and fully charged and it still doesn't work....

I thought you said it starts when you jump it........ The information you are giving doesn't make sense. Does the vehicle start when you jump the battery? yes or no. If it doesn't start check for voltage at the S terminal on the starter when the key is turned to start. If you have voltage the ignition switch is okay and the starter is the problem. Sometimes you can tap the starter with a mallet and it will temporarily work (bad starter). If there is no voltage, the ignition switch may be bad.
