What would cause my parking brake warning light to be on when the parking brake is not on.

comes on at various times and will stay on for a while and then go off and stay off for a while

  Add brake fluid to the master cylinder reservoir. there is a float / height sensor in there and if it is lower than the minimum line the light will go on and off at different times depending on outside temperature and how you drive. Check it out.

  just add the brake fluid the maxmam the the light will go off.
