2005 Infiniti G35 Base 6Cyl3.5L - Brakes
What is cause of occasional smell of burning by left rear wheel?
Left rear hubcap becomes very hot after car use, and residue appears on hubcap. Occasional smell of burning. Is this caused by brake pad or rotor issue? No symptoms of wheel pulling, grinding, brake noise.

Did you leave the emergency brake on a little? The rear brake may have a seized wheel cylinder and not letting the brake release but not enough to drag but enough to heat up. Brake shoes towards the end of their lifespan can sometimes over extend the strength of the cylinder to where they won't fully retract.

No, emergency brake was not left on. Had brake pads replaced 9 months ago, but you may be right that rear brake may have a seized wheel cylinder.
