2008 Volkswagen Rabbit 2.5 5Cyl2.5L - Brakes

left rear pad&rotor serious grind. Obvious repair needed, but why the one side grind? Shouldn't both sides grind?

2008 used 1 previous owner 31,000+ miles. Hiway and city travel. City has lots of hills.

  Could be the installation of rotor and caliper is incorrect. When the brake pads installed imrpoperly where its metal shims facing the rotor will scrape the rotor and creates grinding noise. Replace or reface the rotor and install the pads and calipers correctly.
