2002 Ford Taurus SE 6Cyl3.0L - Transmissions & Drivetrains
Key turns freely, lights - yes, engine - no
Car ran last night. This morning, key turns freely back and forth in the ignition. Lights and radio came on, but the engine did nothing. Had to disconnect the battery to cut the electrical.

Sounds like a damaged Key cylinder

Yes I agree with spanionneo. The switch is easily replaced. The hard part is doing it so you can re-use your existing ignition key. The key has a transponder inside the key for the security / anti-theft system. Have to either reprogram a new key ($150 minimum by a third party like a dealer or advanced locksmith) or have the local locksmith code the lock cylinder so it matches the old one you took out. Otherwise the engine will not start.
