How do I unplug the air conditioner condensation drain to keep the water outside the passenger compartment?

  I used a wire to unplug it , only to have it back up again. I eventually cut the "duck bill" end off, leaving a stub that works fine. I am sure the design was to keep dirt and bugs out, but that was what kept plugging up all the time.
