J and K AUTOMOTIVE TOWING AND REPAIR 2/12/2011get the car running and with a volt meter check the battery set the volt meter to 20V put red wire to positive side of battery and black wire to the negative side of the battery while car is running watch the volt meter it should read around 13 to 14.5V anything less its the alternator and will need to be replace
Never disconnect a battery cable while the engine is running to "test" the alternator. Doing so can cause high voltage spikes that can damage the alternator as well as other electronics.
