  First step - have an inexpensive engine compression test performed (both wet and dry readings) to determine the sealing and condition of the engine. Check for excess oil leaks. How many miles are on the engine? What kind of routine maintenance (oil changes) have been performed?

  thanks for yoyr help. 1) No leaks or smokes are apparent; 2) current engine miles are 185000 km ( 123000 miles).

  Have the routine and regular engine oil and filter changes been completed? What is the compression test results for each cylinder; both the wet and dry readings in PSI?

  Mercedes usually have a habit of eating up oil, say after you run 3,000 Kms, it asks to add up a liter an half.. I suppose that's usual. But its better you check engine compression test..
