What makes my heat air blower motor not work

I put a new fan in, and a little box next to the fan that has wires coming in and out of it, the fan will kick on some times but goes right back off

  Blower motor resistors divert power or ground through resistors to control blower motor speed
  When not replaced, blower will either not function or will not run at all speeds.
