why do the headlights run down my battery

the battery gives a hard start if headlights are used . i have to let the engine run for minutes after turning off my headlights to avoid battery running down

  check connections on battery,make sure altenator is charging battery and if you have a voltage regulator check it also you my have a short in your lights
